Hi all!
Today I am reviewing new-release, horror film: Saw X. It hit cinemas in Australia last month, allowing me the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen. This is my favourite franchise – nothing can come close to taking its place. If you want to check out my series ranking, please click here. Set after the events of the first film, John Kramer travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure, only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer uses deranged and ingenious traps to turn the tables on the con artists. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
WHAT WORKED:
Tobin Bell’s standout performance was the highlight of Saw X. We get the most Jigsaw screen time of any film in the franchise. That was a real treat for me. Furthermore, this instalment had a lot of heart and surprising depth. It was filled with touching moments, bathing John Kramer in a very positive light. For a violent, gory movie, it had the most humanity and vulnerability.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
My biggest issue lay in the pacing. It was very slow, with a steady buildup to the game. It then went far too fast. I personally felt the traps were rushed and a little lazy. Additionally, the Saw franchise is known for its mind-blowing twists; one typically doesn’t see coming. This particular instalment was quite predictable, with very little payoff. I wanted it to have more of a connection to the events of the first and second films. Aside from a mid-credit scene (stay put for that one), it didn’t attach itself to either of the two.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 4/5 stars. Unfortunately, it wasn’t my favourite horror of the year, like I was anticipating. Having said that, I’m glad it exists in the franchise.
Thank you so much for reading! Have you seen Saw X?
Peace & Love xoxo
