Hi all!
Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Thanksgiving. It hit cinemas in Australia this month, allowing me the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen. After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious serial killer, known only as “John Carver”, comes to Plymouth, Massachusetts, with the intention of creating a Thanksgiving carving board out of the town’s inhabitants. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
WHAT WORKED:
This is my favourite Eli Roth film. The gore was turned up to level 100, not holding back for a single second. It was camp as hell. Even when it felt like you should be taking the plot seriously, you couldn’t. The deaths were so theatrical, creative and fun. This concept has never been done before. We’ve had seasonal slashers but never one dedicated to Thanksgiving. They made the most of every cliche possible. Corn cobs, leftovers, turkeys – you name it! Furthermore, the aesthetics were top notch. This is a very pretty film, for all its violence. It puts you right in the spirit of things. It was worth seeing at the cinema for the atmosphere alone. I also think the John Carver mask was quite effective. I expect to see quite a few axe-toting pilgrims next Halloween!
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
There were definitely some plot holes, especially regarding the twist. It didn’t make a whole lot of sense, but I could look past it.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 4.5/5 stars. It was a fun, wild ride!
Thank you so much for reading! Have you seen Thanksgiving?
Peace & Love xoxo
