Hi all!
Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Death Of A Unicorn. It hit cinemas this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. A father and daughter accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
WHAT WORKED:
The main strengths were the violent deaths and gore. There were the obvious kills one can imagine coming from a unicorn and then the not so obvious ones. They got quite creative and for that, I have to give credit where it’s due. It also had some stunning visuals, being filmed in Hungary. The location was so pretty. In a nutshell, it was aesthetically pleasing. Unfortunately, my praise ends there.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
I wish I could say I was invested in the story, but I wasn’t. It took approximately 20 minutes for me to no longer care what was happening on the screen. This was in big part due to the dialogue. The script was awful. I have no idea who wrote it, but it was drier than the Sahara! None of the intended jokes were landing (I was in a cinema filled with patrons to prove it) and it just felt really clunky. They were trying to deliver high-brow humour, that didn’t work. I couldn’t connect to a single character. The chemistry between them all was lacking, despite featuring a stellar cast. Furthermore, it took far too long to get to the action and ‘horror’ of the film. If it had been edited, it would’ve been more impactful. The bones were there. They had the makings of a brilliant concept but the execution failed them. I also wish the unicorns hadn’t been CGI‘d. If they had used practical effects, I would’ve given it a higher rating. They looked so fake. The entire movie lost me the moment they reached the compound. I knew exactly where it was going and sure enough, it was as I predicted.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 2.5/5 stars. It was quite disappointing.
Have you seen Death Of A Unicorn? What did you think of it?
Peace & Love xoxo
