Today I am back for Day #13 of the Black Resilience Booksta Challenge. I explained all the rules in my first post here. I’m hoping this will inspire other readers to read, review and amplify more black voices. Feel free to join me! You can refer to the template below. I chose Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender for Day #13, because the author is from St. Thomas, an island in the Caribbean Sea.

Felix Love has never been in love – and yes, he’s painfully aware of the irony. He desperately wants to know what it’s like and why it seems so easy for everyone but him, to find someone. Felix also secretly fears that he’s one marginalisation too many: black, queer, and transgender. When an anonymous student begins sending him transphobic messages – after publicly posting Felix’s dead-name, alongside images of him before he transitioned – Felix comes up with a plan for revenge. What he didn’t count on: his catfish scenario landing him in a quasi-love triangle. But as he navigates his complicated feelings, Felix begins a journey of questioning and self-discovery that helps redefine his most important relationship: how he feels about himself.

This book was everything! I had wanted to read it for the longest time and it was beyond worth the wait. What I loved most was the education I received about being transgender. Kacen provided so much information about transitioning, gender identity and advocating for your true self. I want everybody to pick up this novel. The best way to learn about something, is to read from own-voices; people that can speak from the heart, relaying their own experiences. Kacen is a transgender, non-binary, black author, with a story similar to Felix’s. We need to continue to educate ourselves and others. The plot itself was so heartwarming, yet went in a direction I wasn’t expecting. I guessed the culprit very early on, but the ending kept me on my toes. I couldn’t recommend it enough.
