Hi all!
What a wild year it has been! My blog has grown exponentially and I’m so proud of it. Thank you for your continued support and love. I appreciate each and every one of you! To end the year with a bang, I am sharing my five favourite horror movies of the year. 2022 gave us some excellent spooky films. We really were spoiled for choice. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
1.) Fresh
Fresh was my first favourite horror movie of 2022. It examines the trials of modern online dating, with a disturbing twist. The story follows Noa (Daisy Edgar Jones), a woman tired of not getting anywhere romantically. One evening, she meets the charming Steve (Sebastian Stan) in a grocery store and their love affair begins. Things seem too good to be true and as expected, they are. Noa soon learns her new boyfriend has an insatiable appetite…for her. The artistic direction of this movie was insane. It was shocking at times – definitely not for the faint of heart. I loved every second. The ending made me laugh out loud. Perfection!
2.) X
Let’s be real, X graced us with its presence, and we were never the same. Little did we know what was coming. Set in 1979, the film follows a cast and crew, who gather to make a pornographic film on an elderly couple’s rural Texas property. However, they soon find themselves threatened by the homicidal pair, one half being Pearl (see below). If you love the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 1974, this movie will give you all the nostalgia. It’s sexy, violent and shocking. Furthermore, it introduced me to Mia Goth. The world instantly fell in love with her, hence the rapid franchise expansion. This was such a fun movie. Easily a favourite of 2022.
3.) Pearl
As mentioned above, the success of X led us to Pearl, which somehow managed to be even better than its predecessor. Set as a prequel, this story takes place in the 1920’s, following young Pearl, a woman eager to become a star. Willing to do whatever it takes to make her dreams come true; we watch our protagonist unravel on screen as she descends into madness. Once again, Mia Goth completely stole the show with her outstanding performance. She delivers a 9-minute monologue at the end of the film, which gave me chills. MaXXXine will hit cinemas in 2024. I can’t wait!
4.) Terrifier 2
I already discussed Terrifier 2 in my franchise ranking (read here). On Halloween, Art the Clown is reanimated, only to discover he has a new sidekick – a little girl dressed like him. Together, they target the daughter of a family, who is able to interact with him in her dreams. From there, the night turns into a fight for survival. If you thought the first movie was gory, you better prepare yourself for the sequel. It was over two hours long, yet not a second felt wasted. The soundtrack, vibrant visuals and of course, shocking violence, made this a feature I won’t soon forget. I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish.
5.) Nope
Last, but certainly not least, we have Nope. In my opinion, this was the best horror movie of 2022. Check out my dedicated review here. It follows two siblings who run a California horse ranch. One evening, they discover something wonderful and sinister in the skies above. Jordan Peele continues to outdo himself. This movie stayed with me long after the credits finished rolling. I still think about it now. The scares were truly effective, there was symbolism everywhere you looked and the acting – truly phenomenal.
Thank you so much for reading! What were your favourite horror movies of the year? See you in 2023!
Peace & Love xoxo
