Found Footage February 2023 – My To Watch List!

Hi all!

Today I am sharing everything I plan on watching for Found Footage February. I wanted to dedicate one month to this particular horror sub-genre. I haven’t seen any of these films, but I’m really excited to check them out. In March, I will post my wrap-up and ranking. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

1.) Grave Encounters

This 2011 Canadian found footage film follows a crew of ghosthunters, hoping to catch some scares on camera at an abandoned psychiatric hospital for their television show. As you can imagine, they end up getting more than they bargained for. I’ve heard Grave Encounters is super terrifying. It’s definitely one of my most anticipated movies on this list.

2.) Grave Encounters 2

I couldn’t watch the first film without the second, so Grave Encounters 2 also made my list. In the sequel, film students break into an abandoned psychiatric institution, to research a movie’s paranormal claims. However, they quickly discover ghosts are very real when they are tortured at the hands of their terrifying subjects. I’ve heard it’s just as good as the original!

3.) Lake Mungo

Lake Mungo is an Australian found footage film from 2008. It’s highly regarded and recommended to me constantly. It follows a young girl named Alice, who drowns while swimming. Not long after, her family begin experiencing inexplicable events in their home. They hire a parapsychologist, whose investigation unveils Alice’s secret double – leading them all to Lake Mungo. I unfortunately know the twist ending already but I don’t think it will take away from the impact. Excited for this one!

4.) Cloverfield

Can you believe I’ve never seen Cloverfield? As a group of New Yorkers enjoy a going-away party, a creature the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Using a handheld video camera, the friends record their struggle to survive, as New York crumbles around them. I wouldn’t normally gravitate toward this type of story, but I’m curious to see what the hype is all about.

5.) The Poughkeepsie Tapes

This is a heavy one. I’m sure I’ll regret subjecting myself to it later. The Poughkeepsie Tapes are about New York homicide investigators, who find hundreds of videotapes of torture, murder, and dismemberment, showcasing a serial killer’s work over the decades. I’ve heard it’s extremely dark and disturbing.

6.) Quarantine

Quarantine is the American remake of Spanish, Rec. I love the original, so I’m excited for the reboot. Reporter Angela (Jennifer Carpenter), and her cameraman, Scott, are doing a story on night-shift firefighters, when a late-night distress call takes them to a Los Angeles apartment building. There, they find police investigating a report of horrific screams. What they discover is too terrifying for words.

7.) The Houses October Built

I’ve heard this is the perfect Halloween found footage. Looking for a good fright on October 31st, five friends set off on a road trip to discover the scariest underground haunts. As their trip seems to reach a dead-end, strange things start to happen. It soon becomes clear that the haunt has come to them. This film sounds right up my alley. I cannot wait to watch it all unfold.

8.) Unfriended: Dark Web

I really enjoyed the original Unfriended, however, I have heard Dark Web is terrible. Nevertheless, I will give it a go. After finding a laptop, a young man goes online to play a game with five of his good friends. He shows them a mysterious folder, playing disturbing videos of people, who appear to be in danger. They then receive an anonymous message warning them they will all die if they disconnect or call the police. The planned night of fun quickly turns deadly, as each user becomes the target of something sinister. I’m expecting it to disappoint but I might be pleasantly surprised.

9.) The Gallows

This found footage has been on my radar for a while. In 1993, a freak accident involving a noose, kills teenager, Charlie Grimille, during a high-school production of ‘The Gallows.’ Twenty years later, on the eve of the play’s revival, students: Reese, Pfeifer, Ryan and Cassidy become trapped in the auditorium, with no way of calling for help. A night of terror awaits the four friends, as they face the wrath of a malevolent and vengeful spirit. It seems Charlie will have his curtain call after all. This is absolutely my type of horror.

10.) Creep 2

I LOVE Creep, so naturally, the sequel made my list. It follows a video artist, passionate about shocking stories. She soon realises her mistake, when she meets an unhinged serial killer in a cabin. I doubt it will be as good as the original, but I’ll keep an open mind.

11.) As Above, So Below

I am so excited for As Above, So Below. I haven’t heard a single negative review about it. Archaeologist, Scarlett Marlowe, has devoted her whole life to finding one of history’s greatest treasures: Flamel’s Philosopher’s Stone. According to legend, the artifact can grant eternal life, turning any metal into gold. When she learns the stone is hidden underground in the Catacombs of Paris, she assembles a crew to guide and document her historic mission. As they begin their descent, the team have no way of knowing they are about to enter their own personal hell. The plot and location sold it for me.

12.) Afflicted

Speaking of Paris, best friends, Derek and Clif, plan to travel the globe, living life to the fullest. However, but days into the trip, one of them begins to show signs of a mysterious illness. They rush to find the source before he is consumed completely. I’m prepared for Afflicted to gross me out.

13.) The Bay

Last, but not least, we have The Bay. It follows Dr. Jack Abrams, the head of the Atlantic Hospital. When he becomes overwhelmed by patients, he contacts the Centers for Disease Control, who initially believe the issue was caused by a viral outbreak. The town soon descends into chaos, as people begin dying en masse, within hours. I’ve heard this movie is excellent.

Thank you so much for reading! Feel free to participate in Found Footage February too!

Peace & Love xoxo
