The Ultimate Reading Challenge #10 – Re-Read A Classic You Didn’t Appreciate In School

Hi all!

Welcome back to The Ultimate Reading Challenge! I outlined in 2022 how the new series will work here, so check that out before progressing further. For my tenth challenge, I re-read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I read an excerpt of it when I was in school but didn’t truly appreciate it. I am going to share my thoughts on it, as well as my prize for completing the prompt. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Plot: ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley:

Frankenstein tells the story of gifted scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who succeeds in giving life to a being of his own creation. However, this is not the perfect specimen he imagines it will be, but rather a hideous creature, who is rejected by Victor and mankind in general. The Monster seeks its revenge through murder and terror.

Review: ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley:

Frankenstein is a gripping horror classic. It’s quite philosophical too. We feel for both Victor and his monster, as they discuss ethical dilemmas; grieving in different ways. It really makes you think: who is in the wrong here? I love the way it was told from multiple perspectives and how the tension increased in intensity, culminating in a heart-wrenching ending. It is beautifully written. Mary Shelley was truly a remarkable woman.

Prize For Completing The Challenge:

My prize for completing the prompt was a wooden bookmark that reads: “Each book was a world unto itself, and in it I took refuge.” This is a quote by Alberto Manguel from A History of Reading. Lovely!

Thank you so much for reading! I will see you next month for a new bookish challenge!

Peace & Love xoxo
