Hi all!
Today I am providing a retrospective response to España All Stars and where I believe it went wrong. Before I begin, I want to say that overall, I loved the cast and was happy with the winner. The queens were excellent, the looks on the main stage were epic, and the level of entertainment was on point. However, it was far from perfect, largely due to the issues I will be discussing below. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
Spoilers Ahead!
1.) Production Pushing the Winner
One of the biggest mistakes any season of Drag Race can make, is when production pushes the winner down our throats. We know from the very first episode, there is no real competition. It has already been decided and we just have to go along with the illusion that the other queens have any sort of chance of taking the crown. As much as I love Drag Sethlas and agree she deserved to win, she became victim to this fatal flaw. In certain challenges, where she was clearly safe, she was put in the top two. It was riggory from the onset. I always say the same thing. We can reach the same outcome, without the interference of production. If the wins had been more evenly spaced and the outcome less forced, I would have enjoyed the season a lot more.
2.) The Erasure of Pakita
Nothing hurt my heart more than witnessing the erasure of Pakita this season. She was barely given an edit and unfairly eliminated third. If this was your first introduction to her, you wouldn’t know just how much of a star she is. I implore you to go and watch her original season. She had the best runway looks and was a powerhouse that made it quite far. I am really disappointed by how little we got to see her in España All Stars.
3.) The Mistreatment of Sagittaria
Circling back to my first point, one of the competitors, Sagittaria, picked up fairly quickly that the season was rigged in favour of Drag Sethlas. In an episode where she should have made top two, she witnessed her rival be placed above her, despite giving a much weaker performance. The moment she called it out, she was harassed by the other contestants. Even after her elimination, they continued to call her stupid, air-headed, a downer, a sore-loser etc. She didn’t deserve the amount of mistreatment she received. It’s a shame production tried to gaslight the only queen that saw what was actually going on.
4.) Season 2 Vs. Everyone Else
All Stars is supposed to celebrate queens across different seasons. It’s a chance to watch them interact with one another and form bonds. There is nothing I love more than seeing my favourites become besties. However, España All Stars was extremely cliquey, especially when it came to season 2. The second season had the most representation and they were determined to stick together until the very end. By the finale, only one contestant from season 3 had a chance to take the crown. It defeated the purpose of All Stars, making it less enjoyable to watch.
5.) The Bizarre Twist
Last, but not least, we have to talk about the bizarre twist. In the penultimate episode, the last queen to enter the final four was decided by the eliminated contestants. This wasn’t strange, but the way production went about it, was. It would have made more sense for the eliminated queens to choose who was staying first and then have the top two lip-sync and be given the chance the eliminate one of the remaining two queens. Instead, the top two lip-synced first and then revealed who they wanted to go home. If that queen matched the vote from the eliminated contestants, they would get to stay. It gave false hope to the eliminated contestant (Pupi Poisson) and just made no sense.
Please keep in mind, there were many fantastic things about this season too. This post is just focusing on what didn’t work. As always, send love, not hate to the queens and keep supporting them however you can.
Thank you so much for reading! What did you think of España All Stars?
Peace & Love xoxo
