Children Of The Corn – Original Vs. Remake

Hi all!

Welcome back to a fun segment on my blog, where I pit an original horror film against its remake and discuss which one, I personally believe is better. You can check out the dedicated category here. There will be a few factors to take into consideration: a.) Does the remake improve the original story, b.) Is the original already so superior, the remake is quite irrelevant and c.) Do both films exist side-by-side, complementing one another in horror cinematic history? For the fifth subject, I am tackling Fritz Kiersch’s, Children of the Corn from 1977 and Kurt Wimmer’s reboot from 2023. These movies follow a cult of children in a small Nebraska town, who kill all the adults as a sacrifice to a mysterious entity in a cornfield. Remember, it’s okay if we don’t agree. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Round #1 – Improvement

Did the remake improve upon the original? Absolutely not! Isaac was far more sinister and effective as the leader of the child cult than Eden. The reboot completely failed in my opinion, due to the atrocious script and acting. It was hard to see past the cringy lines and poor delivery. I didn’t feel that with the original. It may not have been the best horror movie to come out of the 1970’s, but it’s one I respect.

Winner – Children of the Corn 1977

Round #2 – Relevance

Was the original already so superior, it didn’t require a remake? I don’t begrudge Children of the Corn being remade but it wasn’t done well. If you’re going to take on this simple, yet chilling tale, it needs to capture the elements of the original film but reworked in a way that is effective. The reboot was not received well by the public. It garnered low scores from both the critics and audiences worldwide. Such a shame!

Winner – Children of the Corn 1977

Round #3 – Cohesion

Can these two movies exist cohesively, side by side? No. Personally, I would tell anybody interested in the story to forego the remake and only watch the original. A younger audience would probably appreciate the 1977 version far more, based on Isaac alone. The reboot does not work in any way, shape or form.

Winner – Children of the Corn 1977

THE WINNER IS: Children of the Corn 1977

Of the five movies I’ve compared now, only one reboot has come out on top (The Hills Have Eyes). The original has won yet again and this time, by a landslide. Please don’t waste your time with this woeful reboot. It’s not worth it!

Thank you so much for reading! What are your thoughts? I’ll be back next time to tackle Wrong Turn.

Peace & Love xoxo
