Hi all!
Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Stopmotion. It follows a talented stop-motion animator, who becomes consumed by the grotesque world of her horrifying creations – with deadly results. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
WHAT WORKED:
The concept of this film is superb. The meta-narrative is very obvious. A movie about a stop-motion artist, being made with stop-motion. Brilliant! The main strength here lies in the artistry and creature design. The setting and colour palette are minimal, in order to draw attention to the clay figures. There is a need to focus on their every movement and change in expression. Furthermore, the lead (Aisling Franciosi), was an exceptional actress. She played the perfect dark, abused and driven creator.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
I was not a fan of the pacing. It moved far too slowly for my liking, unable to maintain the tension building. I would have rated it higher had there been more stop-motion figures, instead of only two. Additionally, nothing was explained. We don’t learn who the little girl was, or how the supernatural elements were possible. The ending was bizarre and unexplored. I wanted more scares and torment.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 2/5 stars. I think it will work for some people, but it didn’t for me.
Thank you so much for reading! Have you seen Stopmotion ?
Peace & Love xoxo
