Hi all!
To continue my Seasonal Splendour segment, I’m sharing 5 horror movies to watch in spring, summer, autumn and winter. These spooky films will give you all the seasonal vibes. Now that it’s January (in the Southern Hemisphere), I’m tackling summer. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
This post is in partnership with JustWatch. I also want to credit Jason Edmiston for allowing me to use his magnificent artwork.
1.) The Hills Have Eyes
I actually published a post dedicated to comparing the original film to the remake. Please check that out here if you’re interested.
When a family travelling to California is captured by psychotic cannibals, they are forced to fight back in order to survive.
These movies take place entirely in the sweltering hot desert. They feel claustrophobic, sticky and stifling. The horror comes from the grotesque, relentless creatures living in the sand dunes. In the reboot, they are mutants; victims of radioactive waste. There is a real grit to The Hills Have Eyes, akin to Wrong Turn and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I recommend watching both but I personally prefer the remake over the original.
2.) Cabin Fever
Cabin Fever from 2002 is a must-watch in summer. School is out for the year and with it, many deadly adventures ahead!
A fatal disease spreads across a forest, after a few youngsters kill an ailing man in a rented cabin in the woods. Eventually, the friends are forced to devise drastic measures to ensure survival.
Warning – this film is pretty stomach-churning. After all, it’s about an extreme flesh-eating virus. Directed by Eli Roth, it does not hold back in the gore department. If you love a summer-break horror, full of selfish and unlikeable teens, this is the one for you. Just don’t drink the water and you’ll be fine!
3.) The Lost Boys
The Lost Boys may just be my favourite summer horror film of all time. The 80’s vibes are immaculate!
Lucy, along with her two sons: Michael and Sam, move to a small town in California. Soon, the two boys are sucked into the mysterious and dangerous world of bikers, vampires and vampire hunters.
This is one of the best vampire movies out there. It’s sexy, seductive and thrilling. The minute it begins, you’re sucked into a coastal beach town full of surf, sun and sand. What feels like a fresh start for the main characters, soon turns deadly when they come face-to-face with a motorcycle gang of bloodsuckers. Even worse, the lead begins falling for the alpha male’s girlfriend; crossing major and deadly boundaries. If you only watch one film on this list, let it be this one.
4.) Eden Lake
Eden Lake is not for the faint of heart. Prepare yourself for a bleak and disturbing film.
When a couple goes to a remote lake for a romantic getaway, their quiet weekend is shattered by an aggressive group of kids. Rowdiness quickly turns to rage, as the teens relentlessly terrorise them.
There is a confronting aspect to this movie that will stay you long after it ends. The message is clear – children truly are the products of their upbringing. Hate breeds more hate. It does not matter the age; if the individuals are twisted enough – and travel in packs – you better start running. I recommend it for the summer setting, shocking ending and unique terror.
5.) Fall
Last, but not least, we have Fall. I wanted to end with a fun, anxiety-inducing flick.
When a high-rise climb goes wrong, best friends: Becky and Hunter, find themselves stuck at the top of a 2,000-foot TV tower.
If you’re terrified of heights, you’re going to love this movie. NOT! This is the perfect film to watch with a bunch of friends during the summer. It really makes you question what you would do in that situation – not that you ever would be! I love these kinds of popcorn thrillers, akin to 172 Hours and Everest. It may be highly unrealistic but it still manages to impact the viewer.
Thank you so much for reading. Please share your favourite horror movies to watch in summer.
Peace & Love xoxo
