Primate – New Release Horror Movie Review!

Hi all!

Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Primate. It hit cinemas this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. Lucy’s tropical island homecoming turns deadly when her family’s clever chimpanzee, Ben, becomes rabid. With her father away and no help coming, paradise becomes a prison, as Lucy and her friends fight for survival against a pet they once trusted. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

WHAT WORKED:

I haven’t been this scared in a cinema for quite some time. I am terrified of most animals but rabid ones? Awful! Forget Cujo – a killer chimp is far worse. I love that Ben was created through practical effects over CGI. His menacing appearance was much more effective that way. In fact, he looked progressively more deranged as the film went on. Furthermore, the Hawaiian setting really added to my enjoyment. It took place at a beautiful home, set right on the clifftops, overlooking the vast ocean. An aesthetically pleasing location can make all the difference. Primate’s biggest strength however, is its gore. This movie did not hold back in any way, shape or form. It got so bloody and violent, a patron in my theatre declared loudly she couldn’t take it anymore and left. Prepare for stomach-churning kills and visually disturbing carnage.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK

When the film first started, I was concerned. It seemed very shallow and superificial. The script is definitely Primate’s weakeness. However, once things became real, it really took off. I wish the build-up to the terror hadn’t slowed it down. A tighter story and dialogue would’ve made it perfect.

OVERALL STAR RATING:

I gave it 4.5/5 stars. Terrifying and violent as hell!

Have you seen PrimateWhat did you think of it?

Peace & Love xoxo

  1. […] pool. I think what made it so successful was the director behind it. Johannes Roberts also gave us Primate, V/H/S 99 and more. He’s not afraid to push boundaries, which is what this franchise needs. […]
