Whistle – New Release Horror Movie Review!

Hi all!

Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Whistle. It hit cinemas this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. Terror strikes when a group of misfit high-school students discover an ancient death whistle. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

WHAT WORKED:

I knew exactly what I was getting walking into Whistle. A corny, badly-acted film full of tropes. And yet, some of those movies are my absolute favourites. They are created for a fun time and there is very much a place for them amongst the horror community. I would liken this one to Tarot or Until Dawn. I’m also a ginormous sucker for a cursed object. I wrote an entire novella about one (click here). Who doesn’t love a cursed ancient Aztec death whistle? Yes, this story is Final Destination’s reheated nachos but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. I really appreciated how far they took the gore, violence and grotesque deaths. Some of them were super creative. I was internally wincing. This is the perfect movie to watch with friends. Surprisingly, it works as a Valentine’s flick as well. There is a cute romance I totally bought.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

As mentioned above, this is not a critically acclaimed film. The acting is so-so, the characters are one-dimensional and the jump-scares, extremely predictable. Whistle has tropes out the wazoo! You’re not going to get an in-depth storyline with this one. Also, this is a minor gripe, but the investigative process began way too early. Typically, it takes a few deaths before the teens start searching for a solution. In this movie, it took one kill to kick things off. That sounds like an odd critique but the formula is tried-and-true for a reason.

OVERALL STAR RATING:

I gave it 4/5 stars. Some horror movies are just for fun and this was one of them!

Have you seen WhistleWhat did you think of it?

Peace & Love xoxo
