Hi all!
Welcome to a new segment on my blog! Each month, I will rank Taylor Swift’s track #1’s, #2,’s, #3’s etc – finishing with track #12’s in December. However, once TS13 is released, I will do a dedicated post ranking her track #13’s and so on. A quick disclaimer, I am going to be including The Anthology, as it is a full album. I will not be including vault tracks. If you wish to see my vault rankings for Fearless, Speak Now, Red & 1989 TV, click here.
Today I will be tackling Taylor’s track #6’s. This was harder than I thought! It’s okay if you disagree. It’s just my opinion. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
1.) But Daddy I Love Him
In first place I have But Daddy I Love Him from The Tortured Poet’s Department. The minute I heard this song, I thought of classic Taylor Swift. It felt like Love Story 2.0. She breaks the fourth wall here; addressing the public who gave her so much grief for dating 1975 lead singer: Matty Healy. Despite the obvious red flags, she wanted him anyway. The pure joy and serotonin I feel every time I listen to this track is unmatched. It’s full of swooning, pining and drama. If you know the lore, you know.
Favourite lyric: “He was chaos, he was revelry.”
2.) So High School
In second place I have So High School from The Anthology. Can you guess which albums speak to me the most? Amidst the tortured poetry, Taylor gifted us with the most uplifting, fun song of all time. This track is about her husband-to-be, Travis Kelce. It transports listeners back to an early 2000’s rom-com, with the first plucks of that electric guitar. Taylor feels like a teenager again, full of excitement and girlish glee. She recognises the differences between herself and Travis, yet celebrates them anyway. I never skip it.
Favourite lyric: “You know how to ball, I know Aristotle.”
3.) Look What You Made Me Do
Look What You Made Me Do from Reputation was always going to crack my top 3. It’s such an iconic song; marking Taylor’s comeback after “Snakegate.” I love her petty side. This could’ve completely backfired but instead, it became her most legendary and recognisable era. Not to mention, it went all the way off on the Era’s Tour. We still don’t have the vault tracks yet but when we do, you best believe I will be ranking them!
Favourite lyric: “Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time.”
4.) Midnight Rain
Midnight Rain from Midnights has been such a grower for me. I think the Era’s Tour performance took it to another level of appreciation. In this song, Taylor describes herself as midnight rain. She’s dark, complex and ever-changing. Her former flame represents sunshine and security. There are many speculations on who this song is about but I believe it to be a former flame from the Debut era.
Favourite lyric: “”My boy was a montage. A slow-motion, love potion, jumping off things in the ocean.”
5.) Ruin The Friendship
The Life of a Showgirl may not be Taylor’s best album but Ruin The Friendship is absolutely the best written song on there. Be warned, there is a sad twist you won’t see coming. Taylor transports us back to highschool, regretting a chance she never took with one of her friends. She keeps repeating the line “should’ve kissed you anyway.” In the third verse, everything becomes clear. She is referring to Jeff, the subject of her song, Forever Winter, who took his own life. It’s an important life-lesson about the risks we should take in love.
Favourite lyric: “My advice is always ruin the friendship. Better that than regret it for all time.”
6.) 22
One of the best things about being born in 1989 is getting to grow up alongside Taylor. When this song was released, I was turning 22. I have many fond memories of feeling ‘happy, free, confused and lonely at the same time.’ Simpler times! I love the opening chords of this track and how it makes me want to dance. You just had to be there in 2013!
Favourite lyric: “It’s miserable and magical.”
7.) Mirrorball
In seventh place, we have Mirrorball from Folklore. Taylor admitted recently that it’s in her top five favourite songs. It resonates with her deeply; serving as a metaphor for the life of an entertainer. She wants to maintain the love of their audience. It’s also deeply honest. She confesses none of it comes easily to her. It takes skill and effort to sustain her legacy. Not only that, she is the mirrorball. Her music reflects back its wisdom on her fans. That’s why we find her songwriting so relatable. Furthermore, I want to commend Jack Antonoff’s production. It literally sounds like a glittery rotating discoball.
Favourite lyric: “I’ve never been a natural. All I do is try, try, try.”
8.) Mean
In eighth place, I have Mean from Speak Now. As mentioned above, I love petty Taylor. She wrote this track about the journalist who criticised her duet with Stevie Nicks at the 2010 Grammy awards. His words fuelled her to improve upon her own vocals. What I love most about this song is the hindsight. Not only did she end up living in a big old city, she became the most successful pop artist on the planet. How do you like them apples Bob Lefsetz?
Favourite lyric: “Why you gotta be so mean?”
9.) You Belong With Me
I’m sorry to put You Belong With Me this low. I had to speak to my truth. If I’m thinking favourite lead singles off of Fearless, I’m streaming Love Story, the title track, Fifteen and White Horse before this one. There is nothing wrong with it, I just don’t rate it as highly as the others. I will admit, it does have one her best music videos. How did she predict ending up with the football player?
Favourite lyric: “I can’t help thinking this is how it ought to be.”
10.) Shake It Off
Just like You Belong With Me, Shake It Off from 1989 is a fantastic lead single. The issue is, it has been played so many times over the years, I am a little over it. In 2014, I thought I would never tire of it. How wrong I was. Radio fatigue is a real thing. Regardless, it is an absolutely iconic track. Even if you’re not a fan of Taylor, you know those opening chords like the back of your hand.
Favourite lyric: “I’m dancin’ on my own. I make the moves up as I go.”
11.) The Outside
The Outside from Taylor’s debut album was written at just 12 years old. I wasn’t even close to her level of wisdom at that age! It is extremely relatable. Who hasn’t felt like an outcast at least once in their life? I don’t stream it often but I know in my soul that the re-recorded version is going to clear. It’s a beautiful song.
Favourite lyric: “I tried to take the road less travelled by.”
12.) No Body, No Crime (feat. HAIM)
Unfortunately, my favourite album: Evermore, doesn’t always deliver on the goods. I was a big fan when No Body, No Crime was first released but now I might listen to it once a year – if that. Taylor has revealed that her love for true crime podcasts led to the writing of this song. It follows her friend Este (HAIM’s singer/bassist), who believes her husband is having an affair. She knows he’s being unfaithful, but cannot prove it. Suddenly, Este has gone missing and her husband’s mistress has moved in. Taylor knows he killed his wife; determined to avenge her. Great storytelling – I’m just not streaming.
Favourite lyric: “And I’ve cleaned enough houses to know how to cover up a scene.”
13.) I Think He Knows
In last place, I have I Think He Knows from Lover. I’m sorry if this offends anyone reading. I have never gotten into this song. I’ve tried many times but there’s something about it I don’t enjoy. I can’t even sing it off by heart because I barely play it. Maybe it’s the Joe Alwyn delusion or Taylor’s anxiety that he won’t lock it down with her. She’s so in love, yet scared of him leaving. Maybe one day I’ll fathom but today is not that day.
Favourite lyric: “It’s like I’m seventeen, nobody understands.”
Thank you so much for reading! How would you rank Taylor’s Track #6’s?
Peace & Love xoxo
