Hi all!
To continue my Seasonal Splendour segment, I’m sharing 5 horror movies to watch in spring, summer, autumn and winter. These spooky films will give you all the seasonal vibes. Now that it’s August (in the Southern Hemisphere), I’m tackling winter. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

1.) The Lodge
If you want a wintery psychological horror, The Lodge is the film for you!
A soon-to-be-stepmom is snowed in with her fiance’s two children at a remote holiday village. Just as relations finally begin to thaw between the trio, strange and frightening events threaten to summon psychological demons from her strict religious childhood.
This movie is dark, isolating and bleak. It will keep you guessing until the very end – re: what is real and what isn’t. At times, things get so intense, you almost feel suffocated. The snowed in cabin (or lodge) fever certainly doesn’t help! I recommend it for the brilliant performances – especially from the two children – and the mystery aspect. Once the story begins, you’ll be sucked in, desperate for answers.
2.) Wind Chill
Driving down an icy road at high speed? What could go wrong?
Two college students share a ride home for the holidays, but when they break down on a deserted stretch of road, they are preyed upon by the ghosts of people who have died there.
Out of all the films on this list,
Wind Chill is my least favourite. However, I do think it has quite a unique concept. I also wanted to include it due to its similarities to
Riley Sager’s: Survive The Night, which I absolutely love. Young
Emily Blunt plays a sassy, savvy college kid hellbent on surviving the frost. I really enjoyed her performance. Having said that, the movie is quite disjointed. It makes you believe it’s about one thing, when in actuality, the horrors extend past the point of reality. It will work for some, not for others.
3.) Black Phone 2
The summer camp setting in horror is quite beloved, but what about a winter camp? I say we need more of it!
As Finn struggles with life after his captivity, his sister begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone. In her sleep, she sees disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake.
Black Phone 2 is absolutely worth a watch. I’m so glad the same kids from the original were featured in the sequel. They both gave excellent performances, especially
Gwen. Overall, I was quite attached to the limited cast of characters present at the camp. I also enjoyed the droning, grainy footage when
Gwen was dreaming. It was very signature
Scott Derrickson. As was the case in my
Black Phone review, the best part was
The Grabber.
Ethan Hawke is so captivating in this role. There was a
Nightmare on Elm Street vibe to this instalment that worked really well.
The Grabber could easily rival
Freddy as a modern horror icon.
4.) Dreamcatcher
I had to include a Stephen King adaptation on this list. It just wouldn’t feel right otherwise!
Friends on a camping trip discover that the town they’re vacationing in, is being plagued by parasitic aliens from outer space.
I have a very interesting relationship with this film. The first time I saw it, I was unwell. Let’s just say, it didn’t help with my nausea. I thought it would be a fantastical, mystical story about a dreamcatcher. How wrong I was! Upon reflection, it’s actually an underrated gem. King is such a master at capturing the bonds of friendship. I loved the four main characters and their banter. The horror itself is horrific. Imagine being infested with parasitic creatures in the snow? Awful!
5.) Let The Right One In
How about a cold horror romance? Please note, I am referencing the original Swedish version from 2008.
A bullied boy forms a unique friendship with his new neighbor, a peculiar girl with a dark secret.
Let The Right One In is such a beautiful movie. It’s less of a scary film and more of a love story, featuring horror elements. There are some scenes that churned my stomach, but overall, it was quite heartwarming. I loved the dynamic between
Eli and
Oskar. I also
enjoyed watching the underdog come out on top. If you hate the bullies, never fear, they get what’s coming to them! It’s such a feel good foreign classic. Highly recommend!
