April 8th – My Favourite Disney Friendship!

Hi all!

Welcome to Day 8 of the 30 Day Disney Blogging Challenge!

Today we are looking at Disney Friendships. We are talking about two people or animals that have an unmistakable bond, complementing one another. These friendships are full of loyalty, humour and acceptance. There are plenty of pals in the Disney World but whenever I thought about this question, these unique individuals always sprang to mind first:

TIMON & PUMBAA!

The lovable duo became friends when Timon left the Savannah, tired of digging holes with his own species. He wanted to seek adventure. Pumbaa was having difficulty making friends in the grasslands, due to his ‘wind.’ When they found each other, Timon was the only creature able to withstand the stench and together, they set off to explore the great wide world.

Timon is a selfish Meerkat and Pumbaa, a gassy Warthog from The Lion King. They are not introduced until halfway through the film, when Simba runs away from home and faints from exhaustion in their territory. Timon believes himself to be the brains of the operation and Pumbaa, the brawn. However, several times in the movie, it is Pumbaa making the logical suggestions that Timon conveniently claims as his own. They introduce Simba to their carefree way of living, including their famous philosophy, coined by the both of them: Hakuna-Matata – which means no worries. Their home is a lush rainforest, filled with juicy bugs for them to eat. They are truly content, living with ease as the best of friends. I cannot say which one is funnier out of the two. Pumbaa’s form of humour comes through in his flatulence and Timon’s in his sarcasm. If we were to humanise them, they come across as two nomadic teenagers that don’t care for the conventions of adulthood. In one scene, they lay on the grass and stargaze with Simba, trying to discern what stars actually are. It’s a really cute male bonding moment.

They are typical boys. After Nala finds Simba, Timon sings Can You Feel the Love Tonight to Pumbaa, terrified their new friend will leave them for a girl. As anticipated, she convinces Simba to leave his new-found freedom and return to Pride Rock, as the rightful heir to the kingdom. For the first time in their lives, Timon and Pumbaa realise how important responsibility can be. They assist their bestie in reclaiming the land from the hyenas. Who can forget the scene when Timon dresses in drag and does the hula, whilst Pumbaa offers himself up as bait?

I believe the song goes something like this:

“Luau! If you’re hungry for hunk of fat and juicy meat,
Eat my buddy Pumbaa here cuz he is a treat! A hundred dollar dine, a tasty swine,
all you gotta do is get in line. Are ya achin’?
 (Pumbaa) Yup Yup Yup
 (Timon) For some bacon?
 (Pumbaa) Yup Yup Yup
(Timon) He’s a big pig, You can be a big pig too! Oy!”
When the dust settles, Timon and Pumbaa decide to stay with Simba, serving as his trusted companions. The greatest thing about Timon and Pumbaa’s friendship is we see it continue. Not only do they feature in the sequel, Simba’s Pride, but they also have their very own television show, which produced 85 episodes in total! I remember watching it as a child, loving all of their zany adventures together. I recently found the Tsum Tsum of Pumbaa and searched for Timon’s, just so they could be together on my chest of drawers. You really can’t have one without the other. They are the perfect pair of pals!
A friend is someone you can be yourself with, that brings out the best in you. I believe these two creatures embody the very spirit of friendship.
Honourable Mention
Buzz and Woody from Toy Story

  1. Timon and Pumbaa all the way!!! I love everything about them and it is amazing how two different characters are best friends. And both aren’t afraid to be the underdog and just enjoy the simple things of life. I’ve actually never watched the cartoon series, though. I don’t remember seeing it on TV at all :O

    1. I know!! They are so funny and enjoyable to watch! This show was on the Disney Channel. As I child I was lucky enough to have Foxtel so I had access to it 🙂 thank you friend! X
