Black Resilience Booksta Challenge #9 – Read & Review A Book By A Black Author That Changed Your Life

Hi all!

Today I am back for Day #9 of the Black Resilience Booksta Challenge. I explained all the rules in my first post here. I’m hoping this will inspire other readers to read, review and amplify more black voices. Feel free to join me! You can refer to the template below.

I chose Uncomfortable Conversations With A Black Man by Emmanuel Acho for Day #9, because it is an eye-opening, non-fiction book about racism in the U.S. Acho takes on all the questions many white people are afraid to ask – yet needs the answers to, now more than ever. He explains the vital core of fraught concepts, such as white privilege, cultural appropriation and ‘reverse racism’. In his own words, he provides a space of compassion and understanding, in a discussion that can lack both. He asks only for the reader’s curiosity. Whatever your ethnicity, this is a book that changed my life and will change yours.

I love Emmanuel’s YouTube channel. His debut novel felt like an extension of all his videos. He writes in such a casual, relatable way, that makes you want to sit up and listen. I like that he structured the chapters based on real-life questions he has received from white people. There is an entire section at the end full of fantastic resources to assist you in your anti-racist journey, as well as a more succinct Q&A. You will feel uncomfortable, but that is how we are able to move forward in dismantling systemic racism – working towards true equality. I do want to note, this book centres mainly around racism and inequality in America. However, prejudice exists worldwide and white privilege is everywhere. There is much to gain from this book, no matter where you live.

Please order a copy here.

Thank you so much for reading, I will see you next time for Day #10!

Peace & Love xoxo

  1. Thank you for the review. I think I will check it out. I’m currently reading “Me and White Supremacy” by Layla F. Saad. It’s excellent and eye-opening and very uncomfortable at times. My smug was punctured early.

    1. Thank you for reading! I read Me and White Supremacy in 2020 and it was life changing! It’s something everybody should read
