Today I am back for Day #10 of the Black Resilience Booksta Challenge. I explained all the rules in my first post here. I’m hoping this will inspire other readers to read, review and amplify more black voices. Feel free to join me! You can refer to the template below. I chose Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron for Day #10, because it is a fantasy series, set in a West-African inspired magical world. How many years of your life would you sacrifice to gain powers beyond imagining? For Arrah, she would literally do whatever it took to please her family, claiming her place as a rightful witch-doctor. Arrah’s borrowed power reveals a nightmarish betrayal, and on its heels, a rising tide of darkness, that threatens to consume her and those she loves. She must race to unravel a twisted and deadly scheme, before the fight costs more than she can afford.

I read this book in 2020 and unfortunately, it didn’t receive a very high rating from me. However, I still wanted to review it, to amplify more African inspired fantasy novels. I believe this story had all the makings of a powerful debut, it was just extremely ambitious. There was a lot of ground to cover, which made the reading experience disjointed at times. I enjoyed the concept and dynamic characters. It was so exciting getting to read about witch-doctors, voodoo and folklore magic.
