Hi all!
Today I am back, tackling the best horror movies from the 2000’s to the 2010’s. I LOVE spooky films from this decade. It was so hard to choose only five. If you wish to see my list for the 90’s, click here. Here are some of my favourites, ranging from slashers, to animated flicks, to paranormal stories. Let’s get into it!
1.) House Of 1,000 Corpses
This film ignited my love for Rob Zombie. I watched it for the first time as a teenager, with my best friend. Released in 2003, this story follows two couples travelling by car, when an empty fuel tank and flat tyre, leads them down a terror-riddled road, to the House of 1000 Corpses. They soon meet a cast of twisted individuals, who add their victims bodies to a sick human menagerie. The three main characters are: Captain Spaulding, Otis and Baby (Sheri Moon – Rob Zombie’s actual wife). Each one more deranged than the last. Be prepared, this movie is intense and extremely violent. There is scalping, burning, skinning and more. I am a huge Captain Spaulding fan (RIP Sid Haig). His scenes are so captivating (see below). The Firefly trilogy definitely isn’t for everybody, but it sure is for me!
2.) Coraline
This is the best animated horror movie. I love The Nightmare Before Christmas, but it’s nowhere near as scary as this 2009 film. While exploring her new home, Coraline (Dakota Fanning), discovers a secret door to an alternate world, which closely mirrors her own but in many ways, is better. She rejoices in her discovery, until Other Mother (Teri Hatcher) and the rest of her parallel family, try to keep her there forever. Coraline must use all her resources and bravery to make it back to her real life. The visuals, the songs, the strange characters, the evil Beldam and more, make this a huge favourite of mine. I have watched it multiple times and saw it twice in theatres. Just know, this flick is not for children. There is a scene where the Other Mother wants her “daughter” to sew buttons in place of her eyes. I would not be showing that to my kid. Lastly, I want to mention how much I love Other Father’s song. I sing it all the time. I also live for soundtrack.
3.) Trick r Treat
I cannot believe I watched 2007’s Trick r Treat for the first time last year. I absolutely loved it. It’s one of the best Halloween movies! On October 31st, several individuals face their worst nightmares; their paths crossing one another. This includes a couple that blow out a Jack-O-Lantern, a serial killer, a college girl and a few errant teens. What do all these stories have in common? A cute little trickster named Sam, wearing an orange jumpsuit and burlap sack as a mask. For just one night a year, he patrols the streets, ensuring the rules of Halloween are kept. If they are broken, he exacts bloody and fatal retribution. It’s fun, festive and all sorts of creepy.
4.) Wrong Turn
You may be surprised to see 2003’s Wrong Turn on this list. I wanted to include it, because I believe it’s a great film for those new to horror. Friends, Jessie and Carly, are traveling with pals Scott, Evan and Francine, when they undergo car trouble in West Virginia. Moments later, motorist, Chris, crashes into their disabled vehicle. Stranded, the friends discover they’re being stalked by a horde of backwoods cannibals (Saw Tooth, One Eye & Three Finger). The woodsmen are hungry and fierce, and they’ll be eating well, unless Jessie and her pals can outsmart them. It’s violent, suspenseful and a fun slasher. It reminded me of the 70’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The cannibals were so quirky, it almost felt comedic at times. If you want me to rank/review this franchise, let me know. I compared the original to the remake, which you can check out here.
5.) Black Swan
Last, but certainly not least, we have Black Swan, released in 2010. This psychological horror features plenty of twists, turns and brilliant acting. Natalie Portman truly earned her Academy Award for Best Actress. It follows Nina, whose passion for ballet, rules every facet of her life. When the company’s artistic director decides to replace his prima ballerina for their opening production of Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. However, she has competition in newcomer Lily (Mila Kunis). While Nina is perfect for the role of the White Swan, Lily personifies the Black Swan. As a rivalry between the two dancers transforms into a twisted friendship, Nina’s dark side begins to emerge. I’ve watched this film multiple times. There are so many layers to it. I’m such a fan of the body horror and psychosis, that takes over our protagonist. It’s a perfect movie.
Thank you for reading! Which horror movies from the early 2000’s are your favourites?
Peace & Love xoxo
