Hi all!
Today I am reviewing top-notch subscription service, Hunt A Killer. True-crime enthusiasts and budding private eye’s rejoice, because this mystery solving game was made for you. Late 2021, I was watching a YouTuber, lucky enough to be sponsored by this company. She raved about the product, providing viewers with a discount code. With my husband’s birthday in December, I decided it would be the perfect gift for him, plus a fun new activity for us to do together. Needless to say, we were hooked from the beginning. Without further ado, here is my review.
HOW DOES HUNT A KILLER WORK?
The minute you subscribe, you are allocated a case to work on. You will receive six different folders (focusing on the same mystery), packed with documents, letters, emails, objects and more. Once you complete an episode, the next box will be sent out and so on, until you solve the entire thing. After that, you will be given an entirely new mission. You can play on your own, or as part of a group. Each folder takes about 90 minutes (3 hours) to complete, depending on how fast you read/solve puzzles. They also have different objectives. For example, you may be asked to identify the murder weapon in the first folder and prove a suspect’s innocence in the third. At the end, you will need to declare the murderer. If you get stuck along the way, you can locate hints on the official website.
IS IT EXPENSIVE?
It’s not cheap, but it’s so worth it. The team at Hunt A Killer work extremely hard to come up with fun new cases, making them believable. In Australia, it’s about $58 per box. You receive so many well-thought out items, including videos, photographs, an online database to explore and even Spotify playlists, to suit the mood of your individual case. I think you definitely get a bang for your buck. There are also three pricing/membership options available. Finally, a portion of the proceeds from each Hunt A Killer box, is donated to the Cold Case Foundation, a non-profit that provides resources to law enforcement agencies, helping them to solve cold cases.
Look out for the fun, collectible enamel pins that pop up in different boxes (see above).
AN EXAMPLE OF A CASE
The case my husband and I are currently working on, is Mallory Rock. We are in “communication” with the sister of the girl that was murdered. The police are calling it a freak accident, but Gwen knows there is more to Beth’s death than meets the eye. Mallory Rock is a small town, with many secrets and power-plays. As you can see by the image above, the first box provides a colourful magazine, notebook, tourist brochure, map, marker, coaster, police report and more. There is even a website dedicated to the town, that you need to study for clues. The level of detail is what makes this subscription service so fantastic. If you scroll up, you will see another case we worked on, named Curtain Call. That one was set in the 1950’s, revolving around the murder of a starlet at the Cadence Theatre.
I hope this post inspires you to check out Hunt A Killer. I’m such a huge fan of this ‘escape-room’ type service. The staff are super friendly, answering any questions you may have.
Thanks for reading! Peace & Love xoxo
