Hi all!
Today I am back with another horror franchise ranking! In this post, we are tackling the Cube series. I wish more people knew about these films. They are so much fun and very reminiscent of Saw, Escape Room, Circle and more. If you didn’t know, this Canadian horror/science-fiction saga, follows a bunch of strangers, that awaken in a prison of cubic cells. As they try to make sense of their surroundings, they soon realise some of the rooms are wired with deadly booby traps. Only the most intelligent and strategic can survive. The acting is terrible, but that’s what makes it so charming. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
1.) Cube
In first place, we have Cube. Unable to remember how they got there, several strangers find themselves trapped inside a giant cube. The group consists of one-time cop, Quentin, a scientist, Holloway, young math genius, Leaven, the master of escapes, Rennes, autistic savant, Kazan and architect, Worth, who might have more information on the maze than he lets on. The prisoners combine their skills in order to escape, but one by one, the rooms claim them. I am a big fan of films where different personalities come together. These types of high-stakes settings, tend to stir up a lot of drama and tension. The traps were really fun and quite bloody at times. There was an area that required the utmost silence, or the inhabitant would be instantly killed. I found myself holding my breath during that scene. Watching them work out the puzzles, solving the cube was fascinating. It had such an interesting ending too. I highly recommend checking it out.
2.) Cube 2: Hypercube
In second place, we have the sequel. A group of strangers wake up in a sealed room, with no means of escape. The eight people – Kate, Simon, Sasha, Max, Jerry, Julia, Mrs. Paley and Col. Maguire – must find their way out of the cube. However, more areas await them; each one increasingly dangerous. In this instalment, the laws of physics do not apply to the strange and deadly environment. Instead of your classic booby traps, there are traps that age their victims, reverse time and even duplicate bodies. I liked that aspect, but it took a really long time for things to start happening. The first proper death didn’t occur until the middle of the movie, the pacing was much slower and the characters were quite irritating. There was a reveal I didn’t see coming, but the ending left me so unsatisfied. I wanted more.
3.) Cube Zero
In last place, we have Cube Zero – a prequel to the first film. This movie follows two different perspectives: the prisoners trying to escape and the monitors, observing their progress on camera. One of the monitors develops a fondness for captive, Cassandra Rains. He abandons his post (against all orders) to help her out in the maze. There are things I loved about this instalment and things I downright hated. The opening scene was epic. It was so gory and disgusting, I felt a bit sick. Out of the three films, Cube Zero reminded me the most of Saw, featuring some great and memorable deaths. However, the villain/head of operations was so incredibly cheesy, it bordered on ridiculous. I was cringing hard! I don’t know if they meant to make him so lame, but he was unbearable to watch. In my opinion, he was the worst part. The ending gave a nod to the first movie, which was a nice touch, but it was a bit too all over the place. I prefer the structure of the other two films.
Thank you so much for reading! How would you rank this franchise?
Peace & Love xoxo
