Hi all!
Today I am sharing my five favourite horror comedies. This blend of genre works really well, if done right. You want to laugh, yet feel unsettled at the same time. I believe the list below meets that criteria perfectly. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
1.) Happy Death Day
Happy Death Day is the horror version of Groundhog Day – one of my favourite movies. It follows Tree Gelbman, a blissfully self-centered collegian, who wakes up on her birthday in the bed of a student named Carter. As the morning goes on, Tree gets the eerie feeling she’s experienced the events of this day before. When a masked killer suddenly takes her life in a brutal attack, she once again, wakes up in Carter’s dorm room unharmed. Now the frightened young woman must relive the same day over and over, until she figures out who murdered her. This is such a fun film to watch during a sleepover. It’s a hilarious slasher, with lots of twists, turns and laugh-out-loud dialogue. The reveal was a touch predictable, but I enjoyed the journey nevertheless. It also has some great character development, as we watch Tree soften into a much kinder, more compassionate human by the end. The sequel is not as enjoyable, but I still recommend it.
2.) Jennifer’s Body
Jennifer’s Body is one of my favourite horror movies of all time. I’ve rewatched it an obscene amount, never tiring of it. I drew inspiration for my latest novella: The Devil Within Me, from this story. When a demon takes possession of her, high-school hottie, Jennifer (Megan Fox), turns a hungry eye on the boys who never stood a chance with her before. While evil Jennifer satisfies her appetite for human flesh, her nerdy friend, Needy (Amanda Seyfried), vows to put an end to the carnage. This film loves to poke fun at itself and yet, it’s seductively horrific. Jennifer as a succubus (a female sex demon) is both captivating and disturbing at the same time. Furthermore, I love that it was written by Diablo Cody, an incredible woman, that received critical acclaim for Juno. Watch this one with your girlfriends.
3.) Fresh
If you only watch one recommendation on this list, let it be this masterpiece. It’s definitely a favourite for 2022. This horror film examines the trials of modern online dating, with a disturbing twist. The story follows Noa (Daisy Edgar Jones), a woman tired of not getting anywhere romantically. One evening, she meets the charming Steve (Sebastian Stan) in a grocery store and their love affair begins. Things seem too good to be true and as expected, they are. Noa soon learns that her new boyfriend has an insatiable appetite…for her. The artistic direction of this movie was insane. We don’t get the opening credits until a quarter of the way in, which was purely intentional. It also features warm tones and mood lighting. Not to mention, the acting was superb. It was shocking at times and definitely not for the faint of heart, but I loved every second. The ending made me laugh out loud. Perfection!
4.) Shaun Of The Dead
I think Shaun of the Dead would be on most people’s lists. It’s a hilarious/horrifying classic, sending up George Romero’s, Dawn of the Dead. Shaun (Simon Pegg), is a 30-something loser, with a dull existence. When he’s not working at an electronics store, he’s gaming at home with his roommate/best friend, Ed. The only unpredictable element in his life, is his girlfriend, Liz, who wishes desperately for him to grow up. When the town is inexplicably overrun with zombies, Shaun must rise to the occasion, protecting both Liz and his mother. I love dry British humour and this film has it in spades. There are some truly scary scenes in this movie, with just as many funny moments to balance it out. If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you doing?
5.) Young Frankenstein
Last, but not least, we have Young Frankenstein. I can quote this entire movie from beginning to end. It’s in my top 10 favourite horror movies list. This film was directed by the incredible Mel Brooks, starring the iconic late Gene Wilder. Respected medical lecturer, Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, learns he has inherited his infamous grandfather’s estate in Transylvania. Arriving at the castle, Dr. Frankenstein soon begins to recreate his grandfather’s experiments, with the help of servants Igor, Inga and the fearsome, Frau Blücher (*horse whinnies* – if you know, you know). Upon creating his own monster, new complications arise, with the arrival of the doctor’s fiancée, Elizabeth. This is such a quotable film. It is hilarious. HILARIOUS. The horror elements clearly lie in the birth of the creature, but even he will make you chuckle. I know it’s older – shot in black and white – but it still holds up today. Check it out.
Thank you so much for reading. What are some of your favourite horror comedies?
Peace & Love xoxo
