Hi all!
A while ago, I shared my 5 favourite lowest rated horror movies (click here). Today, I am doing the exact opposite. I want this post to prove you should always make up your own mind. Everything is subjective. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
1.) Superhost
Superhost received a generous rating of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, but sadly, it didn’t live up to the hype for me. It follows a couple of travel vloggers, who check into a stunning, remote vacation rental, to share on their channel. However, they soon discover the host will do anything for a good review. In my opinion, Becky was more awkward than scary. She said and did a lot of things that made me cringe. I really enjoyed the location, but the villain herself was lame. This film had so much potential, but fell flat.
2.) Split
Split was another film I had so much hope for. It scored 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. It follows Kevin (James McAvoy), who has 23 personalities. However, there remains one still submerged, set to materialise and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls, Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him. I think the main reason I didn’t love it, was its link to Unbreakable and Glass. It made the ending confusing. I recommend watching all three films for context. It had some very gripping scenes, but overall, I wanted to feel more of a connection to the story and characters.
3.) The Witch
This is where I lose followers! The Witch sits at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and is incredibly beloved by the horror community. In 1630, New England, panic and despair envelops a farmer, his wife and their children, when the youngest son, Samuel, suddenly vanishes. The family blames Thomasin, the oldest daughter, who was watching the boy at the time of his disappearance. With suspicion and paranoia mounting, twin siblings, Mercy and Jonas, also suspect Thomasin of witchcraft; testing the clan’s faith, loyalty and love to one another. I didn’t hate this movie. I just don’t feel any type of way about it. It was – dare I say – a bit boring? Not a whole lot happened. I thought it would be really scary and disturbing. I guess I wanted more.
4.) The Mortuary Collection
The Mortuary Collection received a whopping 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is the highest ranked film on this list. Desperate for work, a young drifter applies for a job at the local mortuary, on the outskirts of town. There, she meets Montgomery Dark, an eccentric mortician, with more than a few skeletons in his closet. Montgomery chronicles the strange history of the town through a series of twisted tales, each more terrifying than the last. The best part of the movie, were the visuals. It was stunning to look at, with amazing cinematography and special effects. That is where my compliments end. The storyline itself was cheesy. I cringed so many times. Furthermore, the reveal was completely unrealistic. I did not buy into the villain at all. I can see why people might like it, but it wasn’t for me.
5.) Possessor
Last, but not least, we have Possessor at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Tasya Vos, an elite corporate assassin, uses brain-implant technology to help her control other people’s bodies and carry out high-profile assassinations. This film had an excellent concept. It was a really cool idea. The execution however, lost me. All of the characters were so unlikable. I didn’t care for a single one. I struggled with the pacing as well. It moved very slowly. I know a lot of people love this movie, but in my opinion, it’s over-hyped.
Thank you so much for reading! What are some higher rated films you didn’t enjoy?
Peace & Love xoxo
