10 Reasons To Watch The Boulet Brother’s Dragula!

Hi all!

Today I am sharing 10 reasons to watch The Boulet Brothers Dragula. This Shudder AMC series combines horror and drag, to create the ultimate reality competition, where contestants fight to become the next Drag Supermonster. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

1.) The Floorshows

I come for the horror, but I stay for the floorshows. Unlike RuPaul’s Drag Race, the contestants aren’t required to walk the runway every week. Instead, they have to put on a show, matching the theme of the episode. For example, on Dragula Titans (Episode 3), the competitors were required to present their best science fiction costumes; giving a terrifying, alien-like performance (see video below). Each floorshow is highly creative, conceptual and captivating. They continue to outdo themselves.

2.) Dracmorda & Swanthula

Dragula would be nothing without The Boulet Brothers. Despite the familial title, Dracmorda and Swanthula are actually a couple. They have been together for over 20+ years and are camp icons in the horror community. I love them both but I’m a Swan girl at heart. Together, they rule the underworld. Not only do they host their own podcast (Creatures of the Night), they are also recording artists, with fantastic tracks such as Wicked Love, Ascension and Gods of Death. They always wear matching outfits on the main stage and are known for their signature ghostly contact lenses. One cannot help but stan these legendary lovers.

3.) The Contestants

Without a doubt, it’s the contestants that make the series. Like any reality competition, you may prefer some over others, but in this franchise, even the most brash are considered icons and legends. Furthermore, the representation is consistently on point. At this stage, RuPaul’s Drag Race still hasn’t cast a single King In Dragula, all are welcome and no stranger to the series. In fact, a Drag King won the third season. Check out my YouTube channel for more Dragula content.

4.) The Fright Feats

Introduced in Dragula Titans, a Fright Feat is a test the contestants must undergo before the floorshow. It typically gives them an advantage going into the main challenge…but at a price. For example, in Titans, the contestants had to eat varying degrees of spicy food that only got hotter every round. The winner was given the option to curse another contestant, that resulted in them not being allowed to wear a wig during the floorshow. It was a great opportunity to take out a threat but unfortunately, the victor vomited days after due to digestive issues. Fright Feats are difficult to watch and as the name suggests, prey on deep fears. Despite the ick factor, they are highly entertaining and sometimes shocking. Literally!

5.) The Extermination Challenges

An Extermination Challenge is the equivalent of a Lip-Sync For Your Life. The bottom placing contestants are placed in a situation they must fight their way out of and only one can survive. For example, in the very first season of Dragula, the competitors up for extermination were buried alive. There were cameras inside their coffins, giving viewers a front-row-seat to their suffering. Whoever maintained the most composure, survived. If you think any of its fake or highly staged, think again. Every single contestant must sign several waivers before coming onto the show, giving production the right to inflict a reasonable amount of pain and discomfort to those in danger of going home. Once a contestant is exterminated, you get to witness a scene of them being “murdered.” Some are quite elaborate and creative.

6.) The Guest Judges

Whilst Dragula does not like being compared to RuPaul’s Drag Race, the two worlds have a mutual respect for one another. That’s why it’s common for various Drag Race alumni to show up as guest judges. We’ve seen notable appearances from Bob The Drag Queen, Katya, Alaska and even Trixie Mattel. In Season 4, we even saw the return of Jade Jolie as a completely different competitor to the one from RPDR. Furthermore, the series has graced us with celebrity horror icons such as: Matthew Lillard, Lauren LaVera, David Dastmalchian, Mike Flanagan and much more. I enjoy hearing their unique and interesting perspectives.

7.) The Winners

The winners of The Boulet Brother’s Dragula get to headline the yearly world tour and are given the title of Drag Supermonster.  I was lucky enough to meet the very first winner (see image below), Vander Von Odd, at Drag Expo in 2022. I can honestly say, each one has been super deserving.

8.) Dragula Titans & Resurrection

Dragula Titans is essentially All Stars. Former contestants from various seasons return to fight it out one last time. In 2022, we had our very first iteration and it did supremely well, despite a continuing love-triangle that became tiresome. Dragula Resurrection on the other hand, is a bit different. This two-hour special saw behind-the-scenes footage of various queens from the past, compete for a place on Season 4. It’s fun and highly worth watching, but it’s only one episode, as opposed to Titans, which is an entire season.

9.) The Cauldron

The Cauldron is a lounge the contestants go for a drink, whilst the judges are deliberating (think Untucked). It’s usually where the most drama happens. If you think the fights on Drag Race are wild, you’ve seen nothing! The competitors on Dragula do not hold back. It can get quite ugly at times.

10.) The Artistry

Last, but certainly not least, I have to mention the artistry. One does not simply go on Dragula. You actually have to be a skilled craftsperson to make it past the first challenge. Every single episode sees the competitors spending long hours (edited of course) in the workshop, putting their costumes together. They use prosthetics, liquid latex, pieces of machinery, spray paints and more. I respect each and every one of them for their dedication and talent. It’s not easy, yet they make it look so effortless.

Thank you so much for reading! Do you love Dragula

Peace & Love xoxo
