The Ultimate Reading Challenge #19 – Join A Book Club!

Hi all!

Welcome back to The Ultimate Reading Challenge! I outlined in 2022 how the new series will work here, so check that out before progressing further. For my 19th challenge, I joined a virtual bookclub (not my own), called My Dark Library. Today I am sharing my thoughts on their pick for July 2024 (Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay), as well as my prize for completing the prompt. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Plot: ‘Picnic At Hanging Rock’ by Joan Lindsay:

It was a cloudless summer day in the year nineteen hundred.

Everyone at Appleyard College for Young Ladies agreed it was just right for a picnic at Hanging Rock. After lunch, a group of three girls climbed into the blaze of the afternoon sun, pressing on through the scrub into the shadows of Hanging Rock. Further, higher, till at last they disappeared.

They never returned.

Review: ‘Picnic At Hanging Rock’ by Joan Lindsay:

Unfortunately, I did not like this novel at all. I know it’s a classic, but for such a short story, it dragged. It was a struggle to finish. I thought the focus would be on the missing girls and the horror elements. Instead, it spent far too much time on the gossip and drama within the boarding school. It also introduced a lot of characters. If your book is under 200 pages, you should limit the amount of people in it. It became very convoluted, confusing and crazy. I used to live near Hanging Rock and have climbed it multiple times. For that reason, I was expecting to connect with the story. Sadly, I didn’t.

Prize For Completing The Challenge:

My prize for completing the prompt was a librarian’s notepad. I love the simplistic, nostalgic design.

Thank you so much for reading! I will see you next month for a new bookish challenge!

Peace & Love xoxo
