Hi all!
Today I am sharing the five best episodes from one of my favourite television sitcoms in the world: Everybody Loves Raymond. The show follows Ray Barone, a successful sports writer and Italian family man, who happens to live across the street from his meddlesome parents and jealous, neurotic brother. All of the episodes are excellent, but the ones mentioned below are top tier. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
Please note: I did not include the episode where they go to Rome. I love it, just not as much as the five below.
1.) Bad Moon Rising (Season 4)
This is hands down my favourite episode of Everybody Loves Raymond. The show received their first nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series because of Bad Moon Rising. Furthermore, Patricia Heaton won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance. It follows helpless Ray, who doesn’t know how to deal with Debra when she’s on her period. In the span of one episode, she cycles through the many emotions a woman experiences during her menstrual cycle. It’s so funny and as a female myself, very relatable! Absolute comedy television gold!
2.) She’s The One (Season 7)
She’s The One is right behind Bad Moon Rising for one major reason: the fly. Ray Romano actually hurt his throat screaming in the clip below. It is one of the best scenes in sitcom history. The plot is inspired by a real-life incident that happened to Ray’s actual brother. He went on a date with a woman; fleeing her house once he discovered her strange obsession with snakes. In this episode, Robert realises his near perfect woman is actually a crazy frog-lover. As funny as it sounds, it actually gets quite deep. Robert breaks down after leaving, wondering if he’s destined to be alone for the rest of his life. In the very last scene, he runs into Amy and they spend the rest of the series together. It’s perfection!
3.) Good Girls (Season 2)
In third place, I have Good Girls from the second season. Raymond learns that the only reason his mother prefers Robert’s girlfriend Amy, to Debra, is because she is a virgin – a “good girl.” Jealous and competitive, Ray lies and tells Marie that Debra was a virgin before they got married. The twist of the episod is revealed at the end, when the family learn that Marie and Frank actually conceived Robert out of wedlock and had been lying to him about his actual birthday his entire life. It’s hilarious and full of contradictions. This episode shows the viewer how dysfunctional the whole family is, not just Ray’s parents.
4.) Baggage (Season 7)
Baggage from the seventh season is the perfect depiction of how petty lovers can be in a marriage. It has a simple concept, with a flawless execution. Ray and Debra become locked in a battle of wills over who should put away a packed suitcase that has been sitting on the landing for two weeks. When Frank and Marie learn of the standoff, they each offer their own way to resolve the conflict. The episode has some excellent physical comedy, which can be seen in the clip below. What I truly love about Baggage is the twist ending. Marie says she has been feuding with Frank for years over a similar issue. However, it had been a one-sided battle all along. Genius!
5.) Dancing With Debra (Season 3)
Last, but certainly not least, we have Dancing with Debra. On Ray’s suggestion, Robert takes Debra swing dancing and thus, they start to bond. At their sudden closeness, Ray becomes jealous; trying to break them up. The best scene is the one below, when his deception is revealed. Similar to Baggage, there is some excellent physical comedy in this episode. It never fails to make me laugh.
Thank you so much for reading! Let me know your favourite episodes!
Peace & Love xoxo
