Hi all!
Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Companion. It hit cinemas this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. A weekend getaway turns bloody and violent, when a subservient android built for human companionship, goes haywire. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
WHAT WORKED:
Everything! It’s definitely a favourite of the year. I enjoyed every aspect of this movie from start to finish. The android trope has been done before, but not in this way. Additionally, there was a generous amount of gore, violence and blood; mixed with pretty visuals, a pink colour grading and a rom-com undertone. It reminded me of Fresh from 2022 – a feature as light-hearted, as it was vicious. It’s very telling of human nature. If the world actually had access to this type of technology, users would undoubtedly abuse it for their own ends. In terms of the performances, they were all top-notch. Even the villains were likeable. I wanted them to remain alive for as long as possible. However, Sophie Thatcher was the standout. She was perfect for this role. I find her very versatile as an actor and captivating to watch. Companion was perfectly paced, full of plot-twists and an excellent horror comedy I can see everyone enjoying.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
The only negative critique I have – and this is less about the actual film itself – is the trailer revealed far too much. It spoils the majority of the plot, which is a real travesty. This is a movie best to go in blind, so why show the most pivotal parts? Not the best decision made by the production company.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 5/5 stars. I literally cannot fault it!
Have you seen Companion? What did you think of it?
Peace & Love xoxo
