Hi all!
Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Presence. It hit cinemas this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. A family becomes convinced they are not alone, after moving into their new home in the suburbs. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
WHAT WORKED:
Presence is a highly original film. It is shot from a first-person perspective in long, continuous takes. This stylistic choice positions the audience to be a fly-on-the-wall, observing the dysfunctional Payne family. We get snippets of their conversations, which provide puzzle pieces to a much larger picture. The POV of the ghost allows for a full tour of the beautiful home it inhabits.Half the time I was admiring the stunning decor! In terms of acting, I really enjoyed Chris Sullivan’s performance, who played the father. He had many poignant moments with his children; the only one who truly cared about the wellbeing of his family. Additionally, there is a mystery element that isn’t spoon-fed to the viewers. I had to look up a plot summary afterward just to confirm what the actual ending meant. I like that Presence took risks and did something different. That is both its strength and weakness.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
I don’t like to proclaim something is or isn’t a horror movie. Having said that, Presence is not a scary film by any means. The real tension lies in the family dynamics and actions of the mentally unstable. If you’re hoping for something spooky, you will be disappointed. Following the perspective of the spirit removes the fear, because you know where it is at all times. That will either work for audiences, or it won’t. Furthermore, the pacing is quite slow. It is a slow-burn feature that builds. Stick with it, because the twist and payoff are worth it. Is it a super re-watchable film? No. Do I appreciate what it was trying to achieve? Absolutely.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 3.5/5 stars. It is a very divisive film, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
Have you seen Presence? What did you think of it?
Peace & Love xoxo
