Hi all!
In 2022, I published a post sharing my ten favourite television characters of all time. You can check that out here. Almost 3 years later, I decided to write up the opposite and discuss some television characters I really can’t stand. This list may seem controversial, but I have my reasons. Those mentioned below either give me the ick, I find really annoying or are just awful human beings. Before we begin, I want to shout-out belistift on Instagram, for allowing me to use their awesome artwork. Please check them out. I also want to stress I am not coming for the actors here, only their roles Without further ado, let’s get into it!
1.) Rory Gilmore (The Gilmore Girls)
Let’s start with the most controversial pick on my list – Rory Gilmore. If you cannot understand why Rory is one of the worst characters in The Gilmore Girls, I can’t help you. The video below articulates exactly why I dislike her so much, providing commentary on her downfall. I highly recommend checking it out. I think we can all agree that the Rory we meet in the beginning, is the best version of her. However, as the show progresses, she becomes more spoiled, selfish and unable to cope with any sort of conflict. To be perfectly honest, I have always envied her. She grew up in Stars Hollow, surrounded by so many people who adored her. She had the best mother, plus an abundance of privilege and opportunities. What I would have given to have had an upbringing like hers. And yet…she completely takes it all for granted. Furthermore, she has no issues being the ‘other woman.’ She sleeps with her ex-boyfriend, despite him being married at the time, only to go on to do the same thing with an engaged Logan in A Year in the Life. Both times she displays zero remorse, only defensiveness. She doesn’t speak to her mother for months because she can’t take being told she was in the wrong. Later on in the series, after receiving one piece of criticism, she drops out of Yale; earning herself a criminal record. Her poor choices might be some of the worst I’ve seen in television history. Rory had so much potential but unfortunately, she lost a lot of her mother’s beautiful traits along the way – instead, adopting more of her grandparent’s qualities. It’s hard to witness such a fall from grace.
2.) Harry Morgan (Dexter)
Harry Morgan, adopted father of Dexter Morgan, wields his weapon of negligence across both the prequel: Original Sin and the main series. His selfishness and total disregard for his own actions, results in significant loss, tragedy and even murder. If you’re curious, I touch more on it here. The video below does an even better job than I do. When you truly analyse this show, Harry is at the root of everything. His choices are extremely careless, especially in the prequel. In the original show, he is just a voice from the grave, and yet, he still manages to be the most annoying character across the colourful cast. He is constantly reprimanding Dexter about his Dark Passenger. We can argue that Harry is simply a figment of his son’s subconscious, but that doesn’t make him any less irritating! His holier-than-thou attitude is really rich, given the plethora of poor life decisions he made whilst alive. Ugh!
3.) Ross Gellar (Friends)
I don’t think disliking Ross Gellar is an unpopular opinion. The reason being he didn’t age well…at all! His biggest issue? His complete and utter toxic masculinity. From his disgust toward breastfeeding, to his tone-deaf comments toward his lesbian ex-wife, to his over-reaction at his son playing with a doll, to his possessive nature – Ross is NOT a catch. Not to mention he dates his college student, who is years younger than him. It was highly unethical and completely ick. I actually don’t think the ‘we were on a break‘ saga is even close to the worst thing he has done in Friends. Try saying your ex-girlfriend’s name during your vows, when you’re set to marry another woman. Poor Emily! Rachel deserved so much better. He was a loser, displaying loser behaviour. Sorry!
4.) Anthony Cooper (Lost)
There are two terrible fathers on this list but Anthony Cooper from Lost (father of John Locke), takes the absolute cake! Imagine having absolutely nothing to do with your son, until you’re an elderly man and realise you need a kidney. You then con your son into giving you said kidney and abandon him once more afterward. But that’s not all! When his son realises his awful human being of a father has done something unforgivable, he confronts him, only to be pushed out a window to his death. Later on, when Anthony Cooper is brought to the island for justice, we learn that Locke isn’t the only victim of his cons. Sawyer ends his sorry life and it is extremely satisfying! Watch below! This character is pure evil.
5.) Tariq St. Patrick (Power)
Similar to Rory Gilmore, Tariq is the lead child of a much more iconic parent and as a result, pales in comparison. After Power ended, Tariq was given his own spin-off show, Ghost, which we suffered through until the bitter end. I kept hoping he would be killed off, but he never was. To put it plainly, this kid is the worst. He is a terrible friend, brother, son, boyfriend etc. He is also the most unrealistic character I’ve ever come across. Somehow, in between selling drugs and dealing with the cartel, he is able to attend a prestigious college, where he gets excellent grades. He can randomly speak multiple languages, wears designer clothes everywhere he goes, frequently blows off his love interests to make a deal and rarely cracks a smile. I just can’t stand him!
6.) Paige McCullers (Pretty Little Liars)
Paige is literally the worst character in Pretty Little Liars. She tries to drown her future love interest, Emily Fields! How they got together after that is beyond me! Not to mention, she has an awful haircut, is a brooding misery-guts and a toxic partner. There really isn’t much more to say. I don’t know what the writers were thinking putting her into the show!
7.) Joffrey Baratheon (Game Of Thrones)
To be fair, Joffrey Baratheon is on most people’s lists. He is a downright whiny baby with a God complex. He is known for being a prancing, abusive buffoon. His death is one of the most celebrated in television history. Everybody cheered when that episode finally aired. There truly is no one more disliked than him. Not only is he the most stuck-up brat in Westeros, he has no qualms getting physical with the women he deems ‘beneath’ him. Watching him choke on his own blood was the most satisfying scene in Game of Thrones.
8.) Matt Moshea (Will & Grace)
This character is super niche, but as Will & Grace is my favourite show of all time, I wanted to include him. Matt Moshea (Patrick Dempsey), is only in three episodes, but his presence irritates me upon every re-watch. In the second episode, Will pretends to be good at sports, so Matt will like him, only for Matt to respond that he just wants honesty in his relationships. Cut to the third episode, where he pretends that Will is his brother, so he won’t be an outcast at work. He tries to put his boyfriend back in the closet, so they can live a lie. How does that correlate with what he said about honesty? Furthermore, he only talks about himself and has to be in control of what they do together. I can’t stand him! I’m also not a fan of Patrick Dempsey in real life, so that doesn’t help!
9.) Aaron Echolls (Veronica Mars)
This is the most difficult character for me to discuss, because it hits a little too close to home. Aaron Echolls (Harry Hamlin), from Veronica Mars, looks and acts like my estranged father. In front of people, he is charming and friendly. Behind closed doors, he is abusive, unpredictable, narcissistic and dangerous. Not only does he beat his own son with a belt, he sleeps with his girlfriend and then murders her. He also tries to kill Veronica in the season finale, for attempting to expose the truth of his actions. As much as I adore this show, it is very confronting seeing this character on screen. I feel so much anxiety just looking at his face.
10.) Zelena (Once Upon A Time)
Last, but certainly not least, we are going with a character who is simply annoying. Zelena from Once Upon A Time is the half-sister of Regina Mills, representing the Wicked Witch of the West. I’ve come to learn she’s actually a fan-favourite from the series, but in my opinion, she was so irritating, I felt like pulling my hair out whenever she was on screen. She came across as a bit of a try-hard. The accent certainly didn’t help her cause. I liken her character to a mythical Hydra. You cut one head off and another grows back. Nothing could keep her down. Just when you thought she was vanquished, she returned worse than ever. It’s a shame because I love the actress. She was so good as Charlotte in Lost (see above), but Zelena knew how to grind my gears and then some!
