Hi all!
Today I am sharing my five favourite episodes from one of my favourite television series in the world: Gilmore Girls. The show follows a close mother and daughter relationship, who navigate the tricky rapids of life together. I have watched the entire thing from start to finish more than I can count and each time, I discover a new layer. All of the episodes are excellent, but the ones mentioned below are top tier. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
Spoiler Warning!
1.) The Deer Hunters (Season 1)
The Deer Hunters from the very first season, sees Rory arrive late to Chilton Academy for accidentally hitting a deer with her car. This delay causes her to miss a test. With an already tenuous hold transitioning to such an elite institution, Rory begins to spiral. I love the scene below where Lorelai confronts Headmaster Charleston regarding the impossibly high standards set by the school. This pivotal moment highlights the true differences between Lorelai’s world and the one her parents wanted for her. She’s a super mum. This episode is not to be slept on!
2.) Nick & Nora/Sid & Nancy (Season 2)
This episode sees a huge tonal shift in the series – and completely for the better! This was the moment we were introduced to the ever iconic, best boyfriend Rory ever had: (fight me on it) Jess Mariano. If you cannot understand why they were perfect for one another, you might not have been paying attention. There was only one person who convinced Rory to return to Yale. Any guesses who? Their long-term positive influence on one another was a testament to the fantastic writing in the show. I came alive the minute we met Jess. He’s the bad boy we all cannot help but love. My favourite scene is when his uncle, Luke Danes, pushes him into the lake after only spending a short amount of time together.
3.) I Can’t Get Started (Season 2)
The finale of season 2 is one of the best in television history. It built the audience up to believe one thing was happening and then turned it completely on its head at the very last moment. Both Lorelai and Rory reach a crossroads at Sookie and Jackson’s wedding regarding their romantic relationships. Lorelai’s hopes are dashed when Christopher receives a call from his ex-girlfriend that she is pregnant with his child. Rory is astonished to see the return of Jess, after he moved to New York. With logic out the window, she spontaneously kisses him (see video below) and thus, cheats on Dean. Yes, her actions were not ideal, but chemistry is chemistry (between both the characters AND the actors) and we had all been waiting for this moment. The final scene shows mother and daughter walking down the aisle in silence, aware of the weight of what’s to come. Iconic!
4.) The Festival Of Living Art (Season 4)
The Festival of Living Art is one of my favourite episodes in the series. It perfectly captured the magic of Stars Hollow in a very unique and creative way. The town is given the opportunity to host an event, where they pose as famous works of art. Beloved jack-of-all-trades, Kirk, is given the role of Jesus in The Last Supper. Needless to say, he takes the position a little too seriously (see below). Talk about committing to the bit! Did you know, this episode won an Emmy for ‘Outstanding Makeup?’ Very well deserved! It’s beautiful, magical and hilarious.
5.) Raincoats And Recipes (Season 4)
Last, but certainly not least, we have Raincoats and Recipes. I don’t think I need to explain why this hit my list. Aside from the kiss between Jess and Rory, this was the episode fans had been waiting for since the beginning. At the grand opening of Lorelai’s Dragonfly Inn, Luke finally confesses how he feels, and their relationship begins. It felt like it was never going to happen, especially when Jason tried to intervene. Luckily, love prevailed! Kirk did ruin it by running past them naked and screaming. Not to mention, shortly afterward, Rory slept with her married ex-boyfriend, but let’s not think about that!
I didn’t include any episodes past Season 4 because I didn’t love the direction the show went in. I will never understand why Luke and Lorelai broke up to make way for April. I still hate everything about Logan Huntzberger. I don’t think Christoper and Lorelai should’ve gotten married and Rory truly became insufferable as the episodes progressed. I adore the show, but the first few seasons were the best.
Thank you so much for reading! Let me know your favourite episodes!
Peace & Love xoxo
