Imaginary – New Release Horror Movie Review!

Hi all!

Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Imaginary. It hit cinemas in Australia this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. The story follows Jessica, a woman who returns to her childhood home, only to re-discover her beloved childhood teddy, Chauncey. It isn’t long before her stepdaughter, Alice, becomes attached to it. As her behaviour begins to spiral out of control, Jessica is forced to confront the evil within the stuffing. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

WHAT WORKED:

Unfortunately, I do not have many nice things to say about this film. My favourite part was the twist. I genuinely didn’t see it coming. What pains me is the concept had so much promise but it did not deliver. I laughed in the cinema several times…but for all the wrong reasons.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

A lot! Firstly, I appreciated that this movie used practical effects but if you looked closely, you could see a man wearing a costume. Secondly, the dialogue was SO cringy and corny. It completely took away from the horror. I made similar critiques in my Night Swim review. Some of the characters were so odd. They said some unbelievably weird things. Thirdly, it was all over the place. There was a scene where the film should have ended but it kept going, making things worse and worse. Finally, it committed the cardinal sin of trying to do too many things at once. None of it worked. The chemistry between the main characters felt forced, the comedic timing was completely off and the jump scares, 100% predictable. Blumhouse hasn’t been delivering lately and it’s a real shame.

OVERALL STAR RATING:

I gave it 1/5 stars. I do not recommend it.

Thank you so much for reading! Have you seen Imaginary?

Peace & Love xoxo
