Scream 7 – New Release Horror Movie Review!

Hi all!

Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Scream 7. It hit cinemas this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life, her darkest fears are realised as her daughter becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past; putting an end to the bloodshed once and for all. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Before getting into the review, I want to touch on why Scream 7 has been boycotted by thousands worldwide. During filming, the lead actress, Melissa Barrera, shared several social-media posts in support of Palestine. Following that, Spyglass, the production team behind Scream 7, fired her for spreading ‘alleged’ misinformation. Jenna Ortega left the cast soon after to support Melissa. Evidently, this is a terrible situation for Melissa, Jenna, the team (not Spyglass) and the franchise itself. If you are curious about the film, yet feel guilty about seeing it – wait for streaming. This is an individual choice and nobody should be blamed/cancelled for what they decide to do. I decided to see it because I review all new-release horror films. I also wanted to provide an honest review others could read, to curb some of that curiousity.

WHAT WORKED:

I don’t have many positive things to say about Scream 7. The only aspects I enjoyed were the moments of tension, the gore, a couple of creative kills and Neve Campbell’s performance. I also liked her daughter, Tatum. In terms of fanservice, there were many good callbacks – as is expected with a Scream film. It remains vastly meta and self-aware, right from the opening scene to the closing one. One might say it was overdone, but I didn’t mind it. Unfortunately, my praise ends there.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

As mentioned above, this film is shrouded in controversy. That was extremely apparent by the final product. It was evident that a whole new script had to be written to compensate for the lack of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. What they landed on was tonally off. It was very much a rushed and choppy job. The movie’s biggest crime however, was the reveal of the Ghostface killer. I will not spoil it but needless to say, it was lame and their motivation, incredibly weak. I rolled my eyes as it was happening. What an absolute joke! Whatever moments I was enjoying, were ruined the minute the mask came off. Scream 7 is not even a quarter of what it could’ve been. Spyglass made a massive mistake. Don’t waste your time on this one.

OVERALL STAR RATING:

I gave it 3/5 stars. Sadly, this is my least favourite film in the franchise

Have you seen Scream 7What did you think of it?

Peace & Love xoxo
