Hi all!
Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Lee Cronin’s The Mummy. It hit cinemas this month, allowing me -the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. The young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she’s returned to them. However, what should be a joyful reunion, soon turns into a living nightmare, as she starts to transform into something truly horrifying. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

WHAT WORKED:
The film goes for over two hours and yet, not a second was wasted. There was a lot of love and care put into the storytelling of Lee Cronin’s The Mummy. I truly appreciated the world/character building, with very little plot contrivances. Everything made sense. I especially enjoyed the dual storyline of the family adjusting in New Mexico and the detective work in Cairo. Furthermore, the gore, violence and horror was pushed to its very limits. Not since Terrifier 3 have I seen such a stomach-churning movie. I knew going in it would be digusting but I could never anticipated just how much. It was giving Evil Dead Rise meets The Exorcist. Nobody can say The Mummy has been done this way before. It’s shocking and scary. I won’t be forgetting it in a hurry.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
Whilst I appreciated Lee Cronin’s take on The Mummy, I did not find Katie as formidable a villain as Imhotep from the original/remake. Her post-mummified face was a mixture of practical effects and CGI – and it showed. She looked slightly comical, which isn’t ideal when you’re going for a serious tone. Speaking of, some of the needle drops in the film took me out. Going from a horrific scene to an upbeat number gave me tonal whiplash. In my opinion, the comedic elements didn’t gel with the terror.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 4/5 stars. Proceed with caution. Can your stomach handle it?
Have you seen Lee Cronin’s The Mummy? What did you think of it?
Peace & Love xoxo
