5 Horror Movies To Watch In Autumn!

Hi all!

To continue my Seasonal Splendour segment, I’m sharing 5 horror movies to watch in spring, summer, autumn and winter. These spooky films will give you all the seasonal vibes. Now that it’s April (in the Southern Hemisphere), I’m tackling autumn. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

This post is in partnership with JustWatchI also want to credit Jorge Serrano for allowing me to use his magnificent artwork.

A classic ghost story with a twist? What more do you need?

Grace (Nicole Kidman), the devoutly religious mother of Anne and Nicholas, moves her family to the English coast during World War II. She awaits word on her missing husband, while protecting her children from a rare photosensitivity disease that causes the sun to harm them. Her daughter claims she sees ghosts. Initially, Grace thinks the new servants are playing tricks but chilling events and visions make her believe something supernatural has occurred.

To be honest, upon rewatch, knowing the twist did take away the impact. It’s only going to hit the hardest the first time. Having said that, the story is incredible and the reveal, iconic. I love how moody and atmospheric The Others is. It is the perfect horror to transition you into autumn. Nicole Kidman really gave this performance her all. I had forgotten about her committment to the role.

If you’re looking for an autumn horror/thriller that takes place only at night, Vacancy is for you.

When David (Luke Wilson) and Amy’s (Kate Beckinsale) car breaks down, they have little choice but to spend the night at a remote hotel. However, not everything is as it seems. With hidden cameras capturing their every move, David and Amy must find a way out before they become the latest stars in a series of snuff films.

I wanted to include a less popular film on this list. Vacancy is so underrated. It’s dark, gritty, bleak and genuinely unsettling. Luke Wilson in particular, shines in his performance. I really bought the fractured marriage between himself and his wife. It actually made me more uncomfortable than the creepy motel. That is the sign of excellent acting. Check it out on a dark, spooky evening.

Del Toro’s Crimson Peak is the ultimate autumn horror movie. The visuals alone are sure to put you in the seasonal mood!

A new bride investigates ghostly visions at a remote gothic mansion that holds dark secrets.

If you only watch one movie on this list, let it be Crimson Peak. It is simply stunning. The warm autumnal tones, sprawling decrepit mansion and Victorian costumes will be a welcome feast for the eyes. Not to mention, the dashing Tom Hiddleston! It’s also genuinely scary and disturbing. As expected, Del Toro delivers truly immaculate and unique creature designs. It’s a visual masterpiece.

The Craft perfectly captures the witchy vibes of autumn. It is a must for this list.

After transferring to an LA high school, Sarah finds that her telekinetic gift appeals to a group of three wannabe witches, who happen to be seeking a fourth member for their rituals. When a minor spell causes a fellow student to lose her hair, the girls grow power-mad.

The Craft is a good choice for those wanting something tamer. It doesn’t push the boundaries, nor keep you up at night. It is a film about feminism, individual expression and magic. It answers the question: ‘what would happen if a group of teenage girls had access to supernatural powers?’ Warning – results may shock you! This movie is for the misfits and underdogs.

Last, but not least, is Sleepy Hollow. If you are seeking an eerie, atmospheric horror set during spooky season, look no further.

Constable, Ichabod Crane, is sent to the tiny village of Sleepy Hollow, where a headless horseman is leaving a trail of decapitated bodies.

I must admit, I have not rewatched this film since I was a child. However, it has stayed with me. I remember being swept up in a spooky, romantic story about an elusive urban legend. I recall the gnarled tree trunks, white billowing nightgowns, pale makeup and a shadowy figure set against the outline of a full moon. Sleepy Hollow always comes to mind when I think of autumnal horror movies.

Thank you so much for reading. Please share your favourite horror movies to watch in autumn.

Peace & Love xoxo
