Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Evil Dead Burn. It hit cinemas this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. After the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws. As they transform into deadites, she comes to discover the vows she took in life – survive even in death. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

WHAT WORKED: 

My favourite part of Evil Dead Burn were the intentional influences from director, Sebastien Vanicek. His French debut feature, Infested, was absolutely fantastic. I was so excited to see how he would tackle this franchise and he did not disappoint. So much of his filmmaking style was present in this movie. Not only that, this instalment had the most cohesive through line regarding the film’s title. Take note of the amount of fire, flames, burning, charring, searing, scorching, heat and boiling. It was satisfyingly consistent. As expected, this series delivers stomach-churning gore, blood, guts, violence and camp. They do not hold back for a single second. If you enjoyed Evil Dead Rise, you’ll love the connection between both opening scenes. We picked up nicely where we left off. Finally, I want to commend the “toxic in-laws” storyline. It took a relatable concept and stretched it to the extreme. Fans of Resident Evil Biohazard (like myself) may appreciate the familiar disease-riddled family, down to the psycho granny. Who doesn’t love seeing insufferable people get what’s coming to them? I’m seated for Evil Dead Wrath – coming 2028!

WHAT DIDN’T WORK: 

Following on from the success of Evil Dead Rise and its iconic opening scene, Evil Dead Burn doesn’t stand out quite as much. It is highly enjoyable but nothing we haven’t seen before. At this stage of the franchise, it’s difficult to deliver something wholly original. Not only that, we just had Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, which was essentially an Evil Dead film. I couldn’t help but compare the two. Furthermore, some of the character choices baffled me. I don’t normally take notice of idiotic decisions but they stood out like a sore thumb in this movie. Other than that, a very solid horror for 2026.

OVERALL STAR RATING: 

I gave it 4/5 stars. A rip-roaring good time!
