Barbarian – New Release Horror Film Review!

Hi all!

Today I am reviewing new-release, horror film: Barbarian. It hit cinemas in Australia last month, allowing me the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen. I believe one should go into this movie blind. It’s a much better experience that way. The basic plot follows a woman who arrives at an Airbnb, only to realise somebody else is already staying there. What happens next is beyond what the imagination can conjure. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

WHAT WORKED:

My favourite thing about this movie was the way it was filmed. It had so many unique camera angles and techniques. If you can, pay attention to the various shots throughout. They helped amplify the scares beautifully. As mentioned above, it’s best to know little to nothing about the plot itself. The fun of this film is trying to work out exactly what is happening. Even better is the feeling, once the realisation hits. At that point, I knew I was in for a wild ride. There were some confusing time jumps but never fear, everything is explained. Finally, I have to mention the actors. I was so excited to see Bill Skarsgard again. He did an excellent job portraying an awkward, suspicious individual. However, Georgina Campbell and Justin Long were the standouts. You will laugh during this movie and yes, you’re meant to. One could label it a horror comedy and they wouldn’t be wrong. There was something very satirical about the performances and the big reveal. The overall experience was a lot of fun. It kept me guessing and I was genuinely afraid in parts.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

My biggest issue with Barbarian was it dragged halfway through. In my opinion, there were a few scenes that could have been cut. If it had been edited with more precision, I think it would have been a perfect movie. There are some films that are lengthy, yet not a second feels wasted. I couldn’t say the same about this one. Other than that, it was excellent.

OVERALL STAR RATING:

I gave it 4/5 stars. It is absolutely worth seeing!

Thank you so much for reading! Let me know if you’ve seen Barbarian.

Peace & Love xoxo
