Hi all!
Today I am reviewing the new-release, horror: M3GAN. It hit cinemas in Australia this month, allowing me the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen. I already mentioned in a previous post it was one of my most anticipated releases of 2023. Designed by Gemma, a brilliant roboticist, M3GAN can listen, watch and learn, as it plays the role of friend, playmate and protector. When the protagonist becomes the unexpected caretaker of her 8-year-old niece, she decides to give the girl a prototype of the doll – a decision that leads to unimaginable consequences. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
WHAT WORKED:
Everything! Horror movies, as of late, have really been impressing me with their well thought-out storylines. M3GAN takes its time building up a narrative, allowing viewers to connect with the characters. Just as we begin to relax into the plot, the sassy doll appears, taking us on a campy, fun ride. My cinema were cracking up at M3GAN’s icy glares and robotic dance moves. Despite being a villain, I really liked the pretty android. In a strange way, I understood her intentions. I even found myself tearing up at the bond between her and Cady. The overall message of the movie was abundantly clear, yet not spoon-fed to the audience – technology can never replace human connection. Go check it out while you can!
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
I don’t have a bad thing to say about this film. It wasn’t the most original idea, but as a lover of the creepy doll sub-genre, I didn’t care. Give me more!
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 5/5 stars. So far, it’s one of my favourite horror movies of the year!
Thank you so much for reading! Let me know if you’ve seen M3GAN.
Peace & Love xoxo
