Hi all!
Today I am sharing my five most anticipated horror movie releases of 2024. 2023 gave us some interesting spooky films, but I think the new year will outdo itself. Without further ado, here are the features highest on my radar!
1.) Night Swim
Night Swim is the first horror movie to have a cinema release in 2024. Coming January 5th, this film follows a former baseball player who moves into a new home with his family. It’s perfect for his children, except for one thing. The backyard pool is haunted and eager for fresh blood. James Wan and Jason Blum serve as producers under their respective banners and for Bryce McGuire, this is his directorial debut. The trailer promises plenty of jump scares and eeriness. I love the concept of a haunted pool. It hasn’t been done before.
2.) Imaginary
Hitting cinemas March 8th, Imaginary follows Jessica: a grown woman who returns to her childhood home, only to rediscover her beloved childhood teddy Chauncey. It isn’t long before her stepdaughter, Alice, becomes attached to it. As her behaviour begins to spiral out of control, Jessica is forced to confront the evil within the stuffing. It will be directed by Jeff Wadlow, who brought us Fantasy Island, Truth or Dare, Cry Wolf and Prey. I’m a sucker for haunted dolls/toys. I don’t expect this film to be a masterpiece, but I will still be there opening night!
3.) MaXXXine
I’m placing my bets now. MaXXXine will be my favourite horror of 2024. After all, X and Pearl made my top five in 2022. After being the only survivor of a massacre, Maxine moves to Los Angeles in the early 1980s, to pursue her dreams of becoming a famous actress. Mia Goth has already confessed this is the best film in the franchise thus far, which has me super excited. Ti West is back as the director and the cast is stacked with big names such as: Giancarlo Esposito, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Kevin Bacon, Halsey and more. It’s expected to hit cinemas mid-year. I’m ready!
4.) A Quiet Place: Day One
Scheduled for release on June 28th, A Quiet Place: Day One, is a prequel to the events of the first film. It will explore the beginning of the alien invasion, through the perspectives of brand-new characters. Michael Sarnoski is the director. I haven’t heard of him, nor his prior movies, but the cast will feature notable stars such as Lupita Nyong’o, Alex Wolff, Denis O’Hare and Joseph Quinn. I really like this franchise and have felt for a while that an origin story was necessary. I have no doubt it will deliver and then some.
5.) The First Omen
Last, but certainly not least, we have The First Omen. This is another prequel to the original film: The Omen. Expected to hit cinemas April 5th, the plot follows an American woman sent to work at a church in Rome, where she uncovers a sinister conspiracy to bring about the birth of the Antichrist. The director is Arkasha Stevenson, who brought us Legion and Vessels. It will star Bill Nighy, Nell Tiger Free, Ralph Ineson and Tawfeek Barhom. Similar to A Quiet Place: Day One, I feel this origin story deserves to be told. I’m excited to see where it goes. I’m expecting big things!
Thank you so much for reading! Which horror movies are you most excited to see in 2024?
Peace & Love xoxo
