Hi all!
Welcome back to The Ultimate Reading Challenge! I outlined in 2022 how the new series will work here, so check that out before progressing further. For my 16th challenge, I read Dolores Claiborne by Stephen King. The protagonist is the caretaker of a disabled woman. Today I am sharing my thoughts on the book, as well as my prize for completing the prompt. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
Plot: ‘Dolores Claiborne’ by Stephen King:
Dolores Claiborne, an opinionated 65-year-old widow, living on the tiny Maine community of Little Tall Island, is suspected of murdering her wealthy, elderly employer, Vera Donovan. The novel is presented as a transcript of her statement, told to the local constable and a stenographer.
Review: ‘Dolores Claiborne’ by Stephen King:
This has become one my favourite King novels. I was completely enthralled from beginning to end. I loved Dolores as a main character and narrator. She was a strong woman you couldn’t help but root for, despite her questionable (yet necessary) actions. Furthermore, the link to Gerald’s Game was excellent. I actually read the book whilst an eclipse was happening. The timing! I highly recommend this very underrated novel in Stephen’s bibliography.
A Word On The Film Adaptation:
The film version is so worth watching. Kathy Bates delivers an incredible performance as Dolores Claiborne. She flawlessly captures the heart and heaviness of the story. Time Magazine listed it in the Top 10 Stephen King movie adaptations for a reason.
Prize For Completing The Challenge:
My prize for completing the prompt was this colourful magnet that says: ‘Eat. Sleep. Read.’ It’s so cute. I love it!
Thank you so much for reading! I will see you next month for a new bookish challenge!
Peace & Love xoxo
