Hi all!
Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Trap. It hit cinemas in Australia this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. Directed by the incredible M. Night Shyamalan, this film follows a man and his teenage daughter, who realise they are at the centre of a dark and sinister event, whilst at a concert. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
WHAT WORKED:
The first and second act of this movie is absolute perfection. The entire concert was very Era’s Tour coded – working as a claustrophobic setting for creating tension and suspense. Josh Hartnett’s performance as The Butcher was phenomenal. I really want to give props for his acting. He made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up with just one unsettling smile. It felt like an episode of Dexter. I loved watching this wanted serial killer using every resource at his disposal to escape.
On a side note, it was very sweet that M. Night made this movie to help launch his daughter Saleka’s musical career. Whilst her acting wasn’t award-winning, she did a great job commanding the stage. Her songs were very catchy!
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
In my opinion, the movie took a real nosedive in the third and final act. It dragged and dragged for far too long. The ‘twist’ itself was extremely underwhelming. It was also highly unrealistic. The whole thing became repetitive and frustrating. I wish it had maintained that exciting, fast-paced energy from the first half. I was certain it would be my favourite horror film of the year…until we got to the end.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 3/5 stars. I was so disappointed by the last act. However, I still recommend it for the concert and Josh’s performance.
Thank you so much for reading! Have you seen Trap?
Peace & Love xoxo
