The Creep Tapes: Season 1 – Review/Ranking

Hi all!

Every single year, I like to participate in Found Footage February. You can find my past posts on this horror event here. For 2025, I decided to review/rank The Creep Tapes: Season 1. Season 2 was just greenlit, set to release on Shudder later in the year. If you didn’t know, this series follows a serial killer (played by Mark Duplass) who recruits videographers to film him. It is a continuation of the Creep film duology, which explores the killer’s collection of videotapes. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Spoilers Ahead!

A BRUTALLY HONEST REVIEW

To be perfectly honest, The Creep Tapes don’t really add anything new to the franchise. Viewers get the same thing every episode, just packaged slightly differently. The formula is as follows – our villain finds ways to isolate his victims via a compelling lie/monetary reward. They proceed to film him being overly dramatic, only for their ‘session’ to end in blood. I appreciate that this is our main character’s murder methodology, but there are only so many ways to tread familiar ground. It would have been interesting to explore more of his backstory (aside from meeting his mother in the final episode) but maybe that will be covered in the next season.

Having said all that, because Mark Duplass plays such an outrageous and exciting killer, I enjoyed The Creep Tapes more than I thought I would. His character is fun, outlandish and downright menacing. You really never know what he will say or do next and that’s the draw-card for this spin-off series. If anybody else took his place, the entire franchise would cease to exist. Furthermore, the episodes are short and fast-paced. I binged the entire thing in a day. It is worth checking out purely for the entertainment factor. Just don’t expect anything revolutionary.

MY RANKING OF ‘THE CREEP TAPES’

1.) Elliot

Our killer hones in on a lone birdwatcher, turning the tables on who is the real stalker and the prey.

‘Elliot’ was my favourite because it was the most unique scenario out of the six. I enjoyed the metaphors of bird-baiting and the surprising twist at the end.

2.) Brad

At a remote estate, a man films a pitch for a new docuseries.

Brad is in second place because this is where our killer is at his most unhinged. He creates such an elaborate ruse, using a murder-mystery element to bait his victim.

3.) Mike

A cameraman looking to make a little money, stumbles upon a budding actor wanting an impressive film reel to advertise himself.

Mike felt like the most quintessential Creep story. If you wanted something more akin to the original film, this is the one for you.

4.) Mom (and Albert)

Things become personal when our killer visits his mother and her new boyfriend, Albert.

I put this tape in fourth place because it gave us a little more insight into our killer’s family dynamics and how madness truly does run in his blood.

5.) Jeremy

Jeremy confronts a ‘priest’ in an episode of his television series “Gotcha!”

In second-last place, I put Jeremy. I just didn’t connect to this one at all. It was a tad boring.

6.) Brandt

A man is hired to film an interesting individual in his hotel room for $1000.

Last but certainly not least, we have Brandt. This story does not advertise what it claims to be (see above). It is pure insanity…and not in a good way. I don’t even know how to describe this tape except that Peachfuzz is at the front and centre of it. It’s less scary and more ridiculous. A big question mark for this particular episode.

Thank you so much for reading! Let me know if you agree with this ranking and what you thought of The Creep Tapes: Season 1.

Peace & Love xoxo
