Hi all!
Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: The Rule of Jenny Pen. It hit cinemas this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. Recovering from a stroke at an assisted living facility, a judge encounters a psychopathic patient, who uses a hand puppet to abuse the fellow residents. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
WHAT WORKED:
Everything worked! This horror movie was made for me! I was lucky enough to see it in the cinema, completely alone, with the subtitles turned on. That definitely enhanced my experience. The performances from both Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow were phenomenal. I couldn’t tell you who did a better job out of the two of them. You have to see it for their dynamic alone. Also, I have a strong love for creepy dolls and puppets. Jenny Pen was just as unnerving as her master. I loved the look of her – simple, yet eerie. Watching the events of this film unfold, felt like a fever dream. I was mesmerised from start to finish. You never quite knew where it was going to go next, or how low the character of Dave Crealy would stoop. If you’re expecting blood, gore and jumpscares, look elsewhere. The horror stems purely from the psychological torment. This slow-burn can feel almost uncomfortable at times. I felt as helpless as Stefan in that wheelchair. In fact, that is the premise for the entire feature. The intended message was to shine a light on the mistreatment and abuse of elderly people. Mission accomplished!
“KNEES UP MOTHER BROWN!”
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
Be warned, this is a strange film. It’s odd, but in the best way. If you’re a fan of The Lighthouse, you’ll also like The Rule of Jenny Pen. There’s that same descent into madness/gaslighting paranoia that borders on absurdity. It worked for me, but it won’t for everyone. There was also a fake-out ending, which almost changed my rating but the ending sealed it for me. It had a strong finish.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 5/5 stars. It’s favourite horror movie of the year.
Have you seen The Rule of Jenny Pen? What did you think of it?
Peace & Love xoxo
