Hi all!
Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Locked. It hit cinemas this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. When Eddie breaks into a luxury SUV, he steps into a deadly trap, set by a self-proclaimed vigilante, who delivers his own brand of twisted justice. Trapped inside the car, Eddie soon discovers escape is an illusion and survival is a nightmare. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
WHAT WORKED:
I couldn’t go past seeing a film that starred two iconic actors, known for their own iconic performances as horror villains (Skarsgard as Pennywise and Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter). Their dynamic, especially toward the end, was electrifying. They worked so well together. I believed every word they said. There is only so much you can do with a single-location concept and yet, Locked still managed to surprise me. It had a much darker tone than I had anticipated. There was depth, heart and substance – a method to the madness. Lessons were learnt along the way, with evident character growth. Moreover, as a huge fan of the Saw franchise, I was thrilled to see how much it seemed to influence this movie. I was getting serious John Kramer vibes! There were so many scenes that made me feel uncomfortable. It certainly didn’t shy away from pushing the boundaries. If you like claustrophobic survival stories, featuring a bloody shirtless Bill Skarsgard, this is the one for you!
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
This film is extremely unrealistic, to the point where it lost a couple of stars. I found quite a few things hard to believe. Additionally, some plot points were introduced, yet never explored. I also felt it could’ve benefited from some editing. There were some scenes that dragged. I’m finding these days that modern filmmakers are struggling to land their planes (i.e. end their movies at the right moment) and I think this one suffered from that same affliction.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 3.5/5 stars. A solid thriller.
Have you seen Locked? What did you think of it?
Peace & Love xoxo
