Today I am reviewing new-release, horror: Insidious: Out Of The Further. It hit cinemas this month, allowing me the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen. Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in, discovers she can travel into The Further, where she possesses an ability to bring what lives there back to the real world. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

WHAT WORKED:
Icon and legend, Lin Shaye, is back to kick butt from within The Further. I will never tire of Elise Rainier. She is my queen and always a welcome sight. Insidious 6 offers a new term for those that can travel throughout the aforementioned alternate reality: couriers. Not only can they pass between the two worlds with ease, they can retrieve/return items from there. I appreciated the fresh level of lore and how it all came into play in the final act of the film. The lead was quite a good actress, delivering a believable performance. I bought the theme of wanting to break through the generational trauma. I also thought the couch fort scene was quite scary. It had a Backrooms quality to it that prickled my skin. Finally, I want to commend the amount of references to the past movies. In particular, the entities. It was nice to see some familiar, albeit messed-up faces.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
To be honest, I left the cinema feeling a little bit empty. Insidious 6 is, for all intents and purposes, a cash grab. Whilst I appreciate the new direction the franchise went in, I couldn’t help but wonder: “did we need this?” How many movies are we going to get before we put the series to bed? I just can’t envision a fresh instalment topping the first three films. Furthermore, I understand that jump scares are a big part of horror, but I am beginning to get over the cheap ones that have been done over and over. I found myself eyerolling at the old faithfuls like a.) the looking under the bed trope, b.) the creepy geriatic character trope and c.) the hiding in the closet – unaware the villain is already in there trope. It’s not a good sign when the demons look so goofy, the fear is automatically extinguished. I didn’t hate this instalment but I certainly didn’t love it. It may just enter the realm of the forgettable, which is unfortunate.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 3.5/5 stars. One to watch with a group of friends!
