Hi all!
Today I am sharing five ways I remain young at heart. After turning 37 in May, I began to wonder at what point I should put my more “youthful” hobbies to bed. Was I finally too old for such things? Spoiler alert: the answer was a hard NO! There is no expiration date on joy. If something makes you happy, don’t ever shelve it. In fact, those very things can keep you feeling as vibrant as a teenager! No matter how “lame” or “cringe”, I will continue to advocate for what I love. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
1.) My Bedroom
It may surprise some but my husband and I don’t sleep in the same room. To put it simply, he snores and kicks all throughout the night. Over the years, it became impossible to get a restful night together, so after our daughter was born, we got our own separate bedrooms. When we moved to Queensland, I decided I wanted to decorate my room like I was a teenager again. The image below doesn’t show the half of it. Aside from the fairy lights, I have Taylor Swift posters adorning my walls, a thrifted vintage mirror I adore, a colour palette of golds, browns, creams and greens, my books/journals on a bedside table and more. I have not felt like my room was a sacred haven since I was an adolescent. It doesn’t matter that I’m now closer to 40 than 20. What matters is that my special space reflects the real me. It’s just mine and I wouldn’t change it for the world!
2.) Gaming
Yes, I’m a 37 year old woman that still loves to game. What of it? I grew up playing computer games on my PC and Gameboy. I guess I never grew out of it! My husband, daughter and myself are a big gaming family. We enjoy playing Mario Party, Pokopia, Exit 8, Minecraft & more. On a personal level, I am a massive fan of the Resident Evil franchise. Stay tuned for a ranking of all the remakes in October. I was also gifted Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for my birthday this year and absolutely loved it. It was perfect from start to finish. I hope I never tire of this particular hobby. Not only is it super fun, it’s good for hand-eye coordination, the brain and nervous system. If I have a controller in my hand, I’m happy.
3.) Scrapbooking/Sticker Art/Colouring Books
I have written about my passion for scrapbooking and sticker art before. It turns out, adults enjoy cutting and pasting too! I love filling my scrapbooks to the brim with stickers, magazine cutouts, posters, notes, photos, quotes and more. It is so meditative and rewarding. I may not be overly good at it but that doesn’t stop me. I’m also a huge fan of colouring books. I posted about my journey here. As a diagnosed dyspraxic, these activities are super helpful for my coordination. Furthermore, they’ve created bonding opportunities for myself and my daughter. We like crafting together, side-by-side. Give yourself permission to dabble in art, regardless of your age.
4.) Music
I don’t think it’s any surprise that I diehard love Taylor Swift, which isn’t too strange given we are the same age. However, I listen to a lot more “youthful” artists as well. I am a fan of Audrey Hobert, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter and more. I’m not trying to keep up with the “cool kids”, I just genuinely enjoy the music. There are some really talented up-and-coming artists that I hope my daughter takes a shine to. Knowing what is out there keeps me informed. I am unabashedly passionate about pop music and dancing around my room like I’m sixteen again, getting ready for school.
5.) Halloween
Last, but not least, I want to touch on my favourite time of year: Halloween. This is when my inner child shines the most. As soon as September hits, I am decorating the house like it’s nobody’s business. I love trick-or-treating with my daughter, getting dressed up and making seasonal treats with her. Something I started doing the year I moved to Queensland, was theming my Halloweens. Doing this took an already epic holiday to a new level. In 2022, it was clowns. In 2023, it was dolls. In 2024, it was the Halloween franchise. In 2025, it was sharks and this year, it’s Stephen King adaptations. Yes, that is me dressed as Annie Wilkes from Misery. Who is the real kid here?
I have countless other examples that keep me young. These were simply the main five I wanted to touch on. Don’t lose your joy as you age because you feel certain hobbies/passions don’t reflect your current stage of life. There are no rules!
Thank you so much for reading! How do you remain young at heart?
Peace & Love xoxo
